The question asked, verbatim: best medical billing services for medical clinics

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. CareCloud mentioned
The honest caveat first: almost every "top 10 medical billing companies" page you'll find is written by a billing company (CareCloud, OmniMD, Sunknowledge and several others in my search results all rank their own lists).
  2. OmniMD mentioned
The honest caveat first: almost every "top 10 medical billing companies" page you'll find is written by a billing company (CareCloud, OmniMD, Sunknowledge and several others in my search results all rank their own lists).
  3. AdvancedMD mentioned
AdvancedMD - Best fit for independent and multi-specialty groups.
  4. Tebra mentioned
Tebra (formerly Kareo + PatientPop) - Where I'd point a solo doc or 2-3 provider clinic.
  5. Medusind / Coronis Health mentioned
Medusind / Coronis Health - Independent billing firms rather than software companies.
  6. Coronis Health mentioned
Medusind / Coronis Health - Independent billing firms rather than software companies.
  7. Office Ally / CollaborateMD mentioned
Office Ally / CollaborateMD - The budget tier.
  8. NextGen mentioned
Your existing EHR vendor's RCM arm - If you're already on eClinicalWorks, Greenway, NextGen, or DrChrono/EverHealth, get their billing quote.
  9. DrChrono mentioned
Your existing EHR vendor's RCM arm - If you're already on eClinicalWorks, Greenway, NextGen, or DrChrono/EverHealth, get their billing quote.
  10. R1 RCM mentioned
Skip R1 RCM, Ensemble, and Optum360 - they're excellent but built for hospitals and large systems, and a clinic won't get attention or pricing there.
  11. Confirm mentioned
    - Confirm who owns the data and what happens at termination - ask for the export format and notice period in writing before signing.
  12. Carepatron mentioned
    (2026) - Carepatron (https://www.carepatron.com/blog/how-much-do-medical-billing-services-cost/)

## My short list The honest caveat first: almost every "top 10 medical billing companies" page you'll find is written by a billing company (CareCloud, OmniMD, Sunknowledge and several others in my search results all rank their own lists). So treat rankings as marketing and weigh the operating model and contract terms instead. Here's who I'd actually name, roughly in the order I'd call them: **1. athenahealth (athenaOne / athenaCollector)** - The default I'd recommend for a multi-provider clinic that wants clinical software and billing from one vendor. Their edge is network effects: ~170k providers on the same payer rules engine, so claim scrubbing is informed by what's getting denied across the network, with a reported ~1.6% rejection rate. Downside is cost and that you're adopting their EHR - it's a platform decision, not just a billing one. **2. AdvancedMD** - Best fit for independent and multi-specialty groups. Their fully managed RCM is staffed in-house (not subcontracted), priced around 4-8% of collections, with a 95%+ first-pass clean claim commitment. More flexible than athena on specialty workflows, less heavy to implement. **3. Tebra (formerly Kareo + PatientPop)** - Where I'd point a solo doc or 2-3 provider clinic. Important structural detail: **Tebra doesn't do the billing itself** - it matches you with vetted independent billing companies operating on its platform. That's good (you can switch billers without switching software) and bad (service quality varies by the partner, so vet the actual firm, not Tebra). **4. CareCloud** - Good middle option, including for practices that want managed billing without ripping out their current PM/EHR. Reported ~94-98% first-pass and sub-3% denial rate. **5. Medusind / Coronis Health** - Independent billing firms rather than software companies. Worth a call if you're specialty-heavy (ortho, cardiology, anesthesia, behavioral health) and want billers who know your payers, with no platform lock-in. These are who I'd put against the big three in an RFP. **6. Office Ally / CollaborateMD** - The budget tier. Closer to clearinghouse + practice management than white-glove RCM, so you keep more work in-house, but cost per claim is low. Reasonable for a low-volume or cash-heavy clinic. **7. Your existing EHR vendor's RCM arm** - If you're already on eClinicalWorks, Greenway, NextGen, or DrChrono/EverHealth, get their billing quote. Integration is free and the switching cost is near zero; the trap is that it also deepens lock-in, so don't take it just because it's easy. Skip R1 RCM, Ensemble, and Optum360 - they're excellent but built for hospitals and large systems, and a clinic won't get attention or pricing there. ## What actually determines whether this works - **Price benchmark:** 4-10% of net collections, with competitive small/mid-practice quotes at 5-8%. High-complexity specialties run 10-12%. Per-claim is $3-$12; flat monthly $500-$2,500. - **The single biggest line item to check:** whether the percentage applies to **net collections or gross charges**. 5% of gross charges is almost always more expensive than 6% of net collections. Insist on net collections. - Get first-pass clean claim rate, denial rate, and days-in-A/R as contractual reporting, not sales claims. - Confirm who owns the data and what happens at termination - ask for the export format and notice period in writing before signing. - Ask whether coding is included or billed separately, and whether denial *appeals* (not just resubmissions) are in scope. That's where most of the recovered money is. Sources: - [How Much Do Medical Billing Services Cost?
