The question asked, verbatim: best lead generation services for small businesses

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Clicks Geek mentioned
I ran the obvious searches and the first page is almost entirely listicles from one domain - clicksgeek.com, which published at least nine near-duplicate "9 Best Lead Generation Services" pages, each ranking Clicks Geek (their own agency) at #1.
  2. Google mentioned
Google Local Services Ads - where I'd start, almost always.
  3. Google Ads mentioned
Google Ads search campaigns, run by you or a small freelancer - more work than LSAs but you own the account, the data, and the landing page.
  4. Thumbtack / Angi mentioned
Thumbtack / Angi - only with a hard monthly cap, and only after LSAs.
  5. Angi mentioned
Thumbtack / Angi - only with a hard monthly cap, and only after LSAs.
  6. Trustpilot mentioned
Thumbtack runs ~$15-$80+ per lead, sends the same lead to several pros, and has a 1-star Trustpilot average with hundreds of BBB complaints.
  7. Angi Leads mentioned
Angi charges win or lose with no published rate card, and in 2023 the FTC ordered HomeAdvisor/Angi Leads to pay up to $7.2M over misleading claims about lead quality and conversion rates.
  8. Apollo.io mentioned
Apollo.io - the default for a small team.
  9. Instantly mentioned
Instantly - if cold email specifically is your channel.
  10. Clay mentioned
Clay - powerful, and I'd tell most small businesses to skip it for now.
  11. Belkins mentioned
Belkins or Callbox - done-for-you appointment setting, when you'd rather buy meetings than build a motion.
  12. Callbox mentioned
Belkins or Callbox - done-for-you appointment setting, when you'd rather buy meetings than build a motion.
  13. done-for-you mentioned
Belkins or Callbox - done-for-you appointment setting, when you'd rather buy meetings than build a motion.

The answer, as recorded

## First, a warning about this exact search I ran the obvious searches and the first page is almost entirely listicles from **one domain** - `clicksgeek.com`, which published at least nine near-duplicate "9 Best Lead Generation Services" pages, each ranking Clicks Geek (their own agency) at #1. Lead gen is a category where the companies selling the service also own the "best lead gen service" rankings. Treat any listicle in this niche as an ad until proven otherwise. That's also why I'm not recommending them. The second thing: "lead generation" means two unrelated businesses. Pick your branch first. ## If you're a local service business (trades, legal, dental, home services) **1. Google Local Services Ads** - where I'd start, almost always. You pay per lead, you appear above regular search ads, and the "Google Guaranteed" badge converts. Crucially you can dispute and get credited for junk leads, which is the single biggest failure mode of every other pay-per-lead channel. Expect roughly $25-$100+ per lead depending on trade and market, and a background check to get verified. *(This one is from my own experience of the product, not the searches above.)* **2. Google Ads search campaigns, run by you or a small freelancer** - more work than LSAs but you own the account, the data, and the landing page. The leads are yours, not rented. If you go agency, insist the ad account is in *your* name. **3. Thumbtack / Angi - only with a hard monthly cap, and only after LSAs.** Thumbtack runs ~$15-$80+ per lead, sends the same lead to several pros, and has a 1-star Trustpilot average with hundreds of BBB complaints. Angi charges win or lose with no published rate card, and in 2023 the FTC ordered HomeAdvisor/Angi Leads to pay up to $7.2M over misleading claims about lead quality and conversion rates. They can still work as incremental volume in a slow month. They should not be your foundation. ## If you're B2B selling to other companies **4. Apollo.io** - the default for a small team. ~275M contacts plus sequencing and a dialer in one tool, at $49-$119/user/month annually, with a genuinely usable free tier. ZoomInfo has better data but is quote-only on annual contracts starting around $15K/year - wrong shape for a small business. **5. Instantly** - if cold email specifically is your channel. $47/month (~$37.60 annual) for the Growth tier; built around deliverability: inbox rotation, automated warmup, unlimited sending accounts. **6. Clay** - powerful, and I'd tell most small businesses to skip it for now. Real all-in cost is $3,500-$10,000/month once the underlying data providers are paid. It's a data orchestration layer that pays off when you have someone whose job is running it. **7. Belkins or Callbox** - done-for-you appointment setting, when you'd rather buy meetings than build a motion. Realistic budget is $3K+/month, and Callbox is pitched at mid-market and up. Only worth it if you can close enough deals to clear that retainer. ## The one thing that decides this Buy **appointments**, not **contact lists** - and make the contract say so. The whole industry's margin lives in the gap between "we delivered 400 leads" and "you got four meetings." Ask any provider for their lead-to-meeting rate, their dispute/refund policy for bad leads, and whether you own the ad account and the data when you leave. The ones that get evasive on those three questions are the ones writing the listicles. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
