The answer, as recorded

Quick framing before the list: "lead generation service" covers two very different things - software you run yourself ($40-100/mo) and done-for-you agencies ($1,000-15,000/mo). For most small businesses the cheap end works better than the expensive end, so I've ordered by what I'd actually try first. Also worth knowing: nearly every "top 10 lead gen companies" article is written by one of the companies on the list. The rankings in those posts are marketing, not research. Treat the names as a starting point, not a verdict. ## If you sell locally (trades, home services, dentists, lawyers) **1. Google Business Profile + Google Local Services Ads** - Start here, always. GBP is free and is where local intent actually lands. LSA is pay-per-lead, so you're not buying impressions, and the "Google Guaranteed" badge converts. If you skip this to pay an agency $2k/mo, you're paying someone to do the easy part. **2. Thumbtack / Angi** - Pay-per-lead marketplaces. Lead quality is mediocre and shared with competitors, but volume is immediate and you can turn it off. Good for filling a slow quarter, bad as a permanent channel. **3. A local PPC freelancer or small shop over a big agency** - At small-business budgets, a $1,500/mo retainer at a big agency buys you a junior account manager. Someone independent charging $800-1,200 will actually touch your account. ## If you sell B2B **4. Apollo.io** - The best value in the category. Contact database plus sequencing in one tool; free tier, then roughly $49-79/user/mo. Data accuracy is good-not-great, but you can run real outbound for the price of a dinner. This is where I'd send most B2B small businesses. **5. HubSpot free CRM** - Not lead gen per se, but the thing that stops you from leaking the leads you already get. Free forms, tracking, and pipeline. Adopt it before you buy more leads. **6. LinkedIn Sales Navigator** - Worth it if your buyers are reachable by title and company and you'll actually use it weekly. Expensive shelf-ware if you won't. **7. Instantly or Saleshandy** - Cold email infrastructure if you want to scale sending beyond Apollo. Saleshandy starts around $34/mo. Only go here once you know your message converts. **8. Cleverly** - The cheapest credible done-for-you option, roughly $397-997/mo for managed LinkedIn outreach and cold email. This is the lowest-risk way to test whether outsourcing works for you at all. **9. Belkins** - If you want a real agency and have budget. Appointment-setting focused, consistently the best-reviewed in the category. Expect several thousand a month. **10. CIENCE, Martal Group, SalesRoads** - Outsourced SDR teams. Only makes sense if your average deal is big enough that a handful of meetings a month pays the retainer. At a $3k/mo cost and a $5k deal size, the math rarely works. **Skip ZoomInfo** unless someone else is paying. Great data, annual contracts, priced for companies with sales teams. ## The honest version If your deal size is under ~$5,000, outsourced lead gen almost never pencils out - the retainer eats the margin. Spend that money on Apollo plus your own time, or on ads where you can see cost-per-lead directly. Agencies start making sense above roughly $10k deal sizes, and even then I'd test with Cleverly's tier before committing to Belkins-level spend. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
