The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest trying them: **1. Zoho Invoice - best free option, and the one I'd start most people on.** Genuinely free for invoicing (not a trial), with templates, client portal, recurring invoices, time tracking, and expense capture. The cap is 1,000 invoices/year and 5 customers on the free tier, which almost no small business hits. If you later need full books, you can move up into Zoho Books ($10-20/mo tiers). **2. Wave - best free option if you also want real bookkeeping.** The Starter plan is $0/month forever and includes unlimited invoicing *plus* double-entry accounting and expense tracking, so your invoices feed straight into your books. Pro is $19/mo if you want automatic late-payment reminders and receipt scanning. Downside: payment processing fees are how they make money, and support on the free tier is thin. **3. FreshBooks - best if invoicing is the core of your business.** This is the nicest invoicing experience of the bunch: branded invoices in under a minute, recurring billing, automatic late reminders, retainers and proposals, and strong time tracking - ideal for freelancers, consultants, agencies, and anyone billing hourly. Lite is $23/mo but caps you at 5 billable clients; Plus at $43/mo (50 clients) is the plan most people actually need, and Premium is $70/mo for unlimited. **4. QuickBooks Online - best if you have an accountant or plan to get one.** It's the US default, so any bookkeeper or CPA already knows it, and it has the largest integration ecosystem plus serious reporting, bill pay, and payroll add-ons. Unlimited invoices and clients on every plan. Starts around $38/mo for Simple Start, so it's overkill if you only need to send invoices - buy it for the accounting, not the invoicing. **Quick call:** if you're a solo operator or very small shop, start with Zoho Invoice (or Wave if you want bookkeeping bundled in) - spend nothing until you feel a limit. If you bill clients hourly and your invoices *are* your workflow, pay for FreshBooks. If you have inventory, payroll, or an accountant in the loop, go straight to QuickBooks. One thing worth watching regardless of which you pick: the monthly software fee is usually the small cost. Card/ACH processing fees (typically ~2.9% + $0.30 for cards) are where the real money goes, so compare those rates - a "free" tool with worse processing rates can cost more than a paid one. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
