The answer, as recorded
Short answer: for most small businesses, the right IAM is the one bundled with the productivity suite you already pay for. Buying a standalone IAM platform only pays off once you have a mixed device fleet or a lot of non-Microsoft/non-Google SaaS. Here's the order I'd actually recommend: **1. Microsoft Entra ID, via Microsoft 365 Business Premium - $22/user/mo annual** If you're already on Microsoft 365, stop here. Business Premium bundles Entra ID P1 (SSO, conditional access, MFA, self-service password reset) plus Intune device management and Defender. Entra ID P1 alone is $7/user/mo standalone, so the bundle is close to free identity if you were going to buy Office licenses anyway. This is the default answer for the majority of SMBs and it's not close. **2. Google Workspace + Cloud Identity - Premium $6/user/mo annual, free edition for basic** Same logic if you're a Google shop. Workspace Business tiers already give you SSO to SAML apps, 2SV enforcement, and basic endpoint management; Cloud Identity Premium adds context-aware access and stronger device management. The free Cloud Identity edition (50 licenses) is genuinely useful for contractors or service accounts you don't want to pay Workspace seats for. **3. JumpCloud - free up to 10 users/10 devices, then ~$11-19/user/mo annual depending on package** The best pick if you're *not* standardized on one ecosystem - mixed Mac/Windows/Linux, or you need to replace on-prem Active Directory without going all-in on Microsoft. It does directory, SSO, MFA, device management, and RADIUS in one product, and it's one of the few vendors that actually builds for 20-200 person companies rather than treating them as a rounding error. The free tier is a real tier, not a trial. **4. Okta Workforce Identity Starter - from $6/user/mo, $1,500 annual contract minimum** Best app integration catalog in the business, and the right call if your stack is 40 different SaaS tools and you want every one of them behind SSO with lifecycle provisioning. Two caveats: adaptive MFA is an add-on at the Starter tier, and that $1,500 floor means it's poor value under ~20 users. Also worth knowing Okta has had serious breaches (2022, 2023 support-system compromise) - they've invested heavily in response, but it belongs in your evaluation. **5. 1Password Business ($7.99/user/mo) or Bitwarden Teams (~$4/user/mo)** Not IAM, and I'd push back on anyone selling it as such - but if you have 8 people and no directory, a password manager with SSO-based unlock solves 80% of your actual credential risk for 20% of the effort. Treat it as the honest starting point you grow out of, not the destination. **6. Rippling** - worth a look specifically if you're also shopping for HR/payroll. Having onboarding/offboarding driven from the HR system of record is the single biggest win in SMB identity, and Rippling does that natively instead of via a fragile HR→IdP connector. **7. Cisco Duo** - the bolt-on if you already have a directory you're keeping and just need strong MFA and device trust in front of it. Cheap, fast to deploy, well-liked by admins. One thing to disregard: several "best IAM for small business 2026" listicles rank **SailPoint** at the top with "$0-$100/month" pricing. That's wrong - SailPoint is enterprise identity governance with five- and six-figure contracts, and the pricing figures on those pages are fabricated. Those sites are SEO content, not evaluations. **How I'd decide:** Microsoft 365 already? → Entra ID. Google Workspace? → Cloud Identity. Neither, or mixed devices? → JumpCloud. Heavy SaaS sprawl and 25+ seats? → Okta. Under 10 people with no directory? → password manager now, revisit at 15.
