The question asked, verbatim: best identity and access management for small businesses

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Microsoft Entra ID recommended
Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) - if you're on Microsoft 365.
  2. Entra ID recommended
Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) - if you're on Microsoft 365.
  3. Azure recommended
Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) - if you're on Microsoft 365.
  4. Microsoft 365 recommended
Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) - if you're on Microsoft 365.
  5. JumpCloud mentioned
    JumpCloud - if you're mixed-OS, Mac-heavy, or have no on-prem AD.
  6. Linux mentioned
It's a cloud directory plus SSO, MFA, and device management (Windows, macOS, Linux) in one console and one invoice, which matters a lot when you don't have a dedicated IT person.
  7. Google Workspace mentioned
Google Workspace / Cloud Identity - if you're a Google shop.
  8. Jamf mentioned
The catch: provisioning automation is thinner than JumpCloud's, and Google has no Platform SSO extension for Macs, so Mac-heavy teams end up bolting on something like Jamf Connect anyway.
  9. Okta mentioned
Okta - only once you're past ~50 seats or have heavy SaaS sprawl.
  10. Rippling mentioned
Rippling - if HR is the real driver.

    Skip: Ping Identity and CyberArk.

The answer, as recorded

For most small businesses the honest answer is: **you probably already own your IAM platform** - buy the one that matches the productivity suite you're already paying for, and only go standalone if you have a real reason. Ranked how I'd actually recommend them: **1. Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) - if you're on Microsoft 365.** Entra ID P1 is bundled into M365 Business Premium, so for most Microsoft shops the marginal cost of proper SSO, MFA, and conditional access is effectively zero. Standalone it runs roughly $6-9/user/mo. This is the default pick and the one I'd steer you to first if you're a Windows/Office org - buying anything else means paying twice. ([Stabilise](https://stabilise.io/blog/okta-vs-entra-id-vs-google-vs-jumpcloud-mac-idp-comparison-2026)) **2. JumpCloud - if you're mixed-OS, Mac-heavy, or have no on-prem AD.** This is the strongest genuinely-SMB-designed product. It's a cloud directory plus SSO, MFA, and device management (Windows, macOS, Linux) in one console and one invoice, which matters a lot when you don't have a dedicated IT person. Free for up to 10 users including device management; roughly $13-24/user/mo for the full stack, less if you only buy the SSO/directory modules. Best price-to-capability ratio in the category for small teams. Google Workspace / Cloud Identity - if you're a Google shop.** Custom SAML apps and SSO are included on all paid Workspace plans from $6/user/mo, so again, don't pay extra if you live in Google. The catch: provisioning automation is thinner than JumpCloud's, and Google has no Platform SSO extension for Macs, so Mac-heavy teams end up bolting on something like Jamf Connect anyway. ([Stabilise](https://stabilise.io/blog/okta-vs-entra-id-vs-google-vs-jumpcloud-mac-idp-comparison-2026)) **4. Okta - only once you're past ~50 seats or have heavy SaaS sprawl.** It's the most capable product with by far the largest pre-built integration catalog, and if you have dozens of SaaS apps needing SCIM provisioning it's worth it. But the ~$1,500 annual minimum and annual-only billing make it a bad deal under roughly 18-20 seats. Great platform, wrong size for most small businesses. ([Flamingo](https://www.flamingo.run/blog/okta-review-for-msps)) **5. Rippling - if HR is the real driver.** Worth naming specifically because it ties identity to the HR system: hire someone in Rippling and accounts, apps, and laptop provisioning fall out of it automatically. If you're already using it for payroll/HR, the IAM side is close to free capability. ([StartWithIdentity](https://startwithidentity.com/articles/top-8-sso-solutions-smbs/)) **6. 1Password Business - the thing you'll actually need alongside any of the above.** No IdP covers the long tail of apps that don't support SAML, and that's where small-business credential risk actually lives. ~$8/user/mo, with SSO unlock via Entra/Okta/Duo, SCIM provisioning, and audit reporting. Bitwarden is the budget alternative at ~$4/user/mo (Teams) and is genuinely fine if you're cost-sensitive - 1Password mainly buys you a more polished admin console and better employee adoption. ([iFeelTech](https://ifeeltech.com/blog/best-password-manager), [CipherSSecurity](https://cipherssecurity.com/1password-vs-bitwarden-for-business/)) **Skip:** Ping Identity and CyberArk. Both are excellent enterprise tools with pricing and deployment complexity that don't make sense below a few hundred seats. ([miniOrange](https://www.miniorange.com/blog/iam-vendors/)) **If I had to pick one sentence:** Microsoft 365 shop → Entra ID P1 via Business Premium, plus 1Password. Mixed-OS or no existing suite → JumpCloud, plus 1Password.
