The answer, as recorded

Searched. One important thing up front: a lot of the "best of 2026" listicles still recommend **Causal** and **Finmark**, and both are gone - Causal was acquired by LucaNet in Oct 2024 and sunset as a standalone, and BILL discontinued standalone Finmark on April 1, 2026. Skip those regardless of where you see them ranked. Here's what I'd actually name, in order: **1. QuickBooks Online (+ Xero as the equal alternative)** Start here, because "financial planning" without clean books is just guessing. Both are the ledger that every tool below plugs into. QBO Advanced ($275/mo after promo) adds KPI dashboards and cash-flow/P&L forecasting, but at that price I'd rather buy a cheap QBO tier plus a dedicated planning tool. Xero runs roughly $3-17/mo and is the better pick if you work with a bookkeeper who prefers it. **2. LivePlan** - the best fit for a genuinely small business (under ~20 people, no finance hire). Budgets, formulas, and forecasts in a format a bank or SBA lender will accept, syncing with QBO/Xero so actuals land next to plan automatically. Reviewers consistently rate it easiest to set up and administer. ~$20-40/mo. **3. Float** - if your real problem is *cash timing* rather than annual budgeting. It's a forecasting layer on top of QBO/Xero and the strongest tool here for rolling forecasts and scenarios ("what if that invoice lands 45 days late"). Rated 4.8/5, above LivePlan's 4.5, and beats it specifically on rolling forecasts and support. **4. Fathom** - reporting and KPI tracking with forecasting attached, from $53/mo with a 14-day trial. Best if an accountant or fractional CFO is involved; it produces the board-ready/management-report output the cheaper tools don't. **5. Jirav** - the step up when you need real three-statement modeling plus headcount/driver planning. Needs more setup than LivePlan, but rated 4.7/5 with notably better ongoing support. Right once you have someone who owns the numbers. **6. Cube or Datarails** - for when you've outgrown the above but live in spreadsheets. Both keep Excel/Sheets as the interface and automate the data pulls behind it; Cube is the better-priced of the two for growing teams. **7. BILL Insights & Cash Flow Forecasting** - worth a look only if you already run AP/AR through BILL. It's where the Finmark technology ended up, so it's convenient rather than best-in-class. **Not for you: Mosaic** (~$5,000/yr+) and Workday Adaptive - both are mid-market/VC-backed-company tools and will be overkill. My one-line answer if you want a default: QBO or Xero for the books, plus **LivePlan** if you need budgets and a plan, or **Float** if you need to know whether you'll make payroll in nine weeks. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
