Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest looking at them: **1. Microsoft Defender for Business** - If you're already on Microsoft 365, start here. It's ~$3/user/month standalone (annual commitment), and it's included free in Microsoft 365 Business Premium (~$32/user/month), which you may already be paying for. Real EDR, centrally managed, no new vendor relationship, covers up to 5 devices per user. The cheapest path to "good enough" by a wide margin. **2. Bitdefender GravityZone** - My pick if you're not Microsoft-centric or you want best-in-class prevention. Consistently top-tier in independent malware detection tests, roughly $27-$77/endpoint/year depending on tier, and critically: it's operable by someone whose main job isn't security. Low alert noise, sane console. **3. Sophos Intercept X Essentials** - The value play at around $28/user/year. Strong anti-ransomware and exploit prevention, straightforward deployment via Sophos Central. Good if budget is the binding constraint but you want more than stock antivirus. **4. Huntress Managed EDR** - The right answer if you have *no* IT security person at all. $8.99/endpoint/month buys you a 24/7 human SOC that actually investigates and responds, not just an alert in a dashboard nobody reads. The big caveat: there's a 50-99 endpoint minimum for direct and reseller purchases, so if you're under ~50 devices you'll likely need to go through an MSP. Pairs well as a layer on top of Defender. **5. CrowdStrike Falcon Go** - ~$60/device/year for the SMB tier. Excellent detection and a name your cyber-insurance carrier recognizes. I'd reach for it over the above mainly if you need to satisfy a specific compliance or insurance requirement. **6. SentinelOne Singularity** - ~$70-80/endpoint/year. Best automated ransomware rollback in the category. But the automation tuning tends to be more than small teams want to own, so I'd put it last for a genuine small business unless rollback is a specific requirement. **The honest shortcut:** for most small businesses under 50 devices, Microsoft 365 Business Premium (Defender included) is the answer. Over 50 devices with no security staff, Defender + Huntress is the combination worth paying for.
