- Sophos Intercept X recommended
One thing I'd flag: Sophos Intercept X shows up at the top of a lot of "best for small business" listicles, and it's a capable product with good MDR, but it was tested in the March-June 2026 AV-Comparatives business round and was the one product of sixteen that did not meet the Approved Business Pro

Here's what I'd actually recommend, in order: **1. Microsoft Defender for Business** - Start here if you're already on Microsoft 365. It's included in Business Premium and otherwise about $3/user/month ($36/year) for Defender for Endpoint Plan 1, covering up to 5 devices per user. You get real EDR, not just antivirus, managed from the same admin center you already use, and Microsoft earned the AV-Comparatives Approved Business Product award in the March-June 2026 round. For most businesses under ~50 people the honest answer is that you're probably already paying for this and not using it. **2. Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security** - The best choice if you're not Microsoft-centric or want something stronger than Defender without enterprise pricing. Consistently top-tier in independent lab testing, roughly $32-$88 per device/year depending on tier, and the Premium tier adds EDR and risk analytics. This is the standard "we want excellent protection, we don't have a security team" pick. **3. Huntress Managed EDR** - Pick this when you have no one to watch the alerts. It's a lightweight agent plus 24/7 human analysts who investigate and tell you in plain English what to do, around $9/endpoint/month, and it also monitors Microsoft 365 for business email compromise. It's the only serious MDR genuinely built for sub-200-employee shops. Caveat: there's typically a 50-endpoint minimum, so very small teams usually buy it through an MSP. It layers on top of Defender rather than replacing it. **4. ESET PROTECT Entry** - Worth a look if you have older hardware or performance-sensitive machines. ESET posted among the lowest system-impact scores in the entire 2026 test field while still taking the Approved award. Low-noise, low-overhead, easy to administer. **5. CrowdStrike Falcon Go / Pro** - Overkill for most small businesses, but the right call if you're in finance, healthcare, or legal, handle sensitive client data, or face real compliance pressure. Best-in-class detection and threat intelligence, starting around $60/device/year for Go and climbing steeply from there. One thing I'd flag: **Sophos Intercept X** shows up at the top of a lot of "best for small business" listicles, and it's a capable product with good MDR, but it was tested in the March-June 2026 AV-Comparatives business round and was the one product of sixteen that did *not* meet the Approved Business Product criteria. I wouldn't rule it out on a single test cycle, but I wouldn't make it my default recommendation right now either. Note that the pricing figures above come from vendor pages and comparison aggregators and move around a lot with tier, term, and seat count - treat them as ballpark, and expect to negotiate or go through a reseller above ~25 seats. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
