The answer, as recorded

## First, the framing that actually matters For a remote team, the classic "gateway" (MX-record rerouting, appliance-style) is usually the *wrong* shape. Remote/cloud-first teams get hit by BEC, vendor impersonation, and account takeover - threats with no attachment or payload for a gateway to scan. API-based tools plug into Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace directly, see internal and outbound mail too, and need no mail-flow changes ([Sublime](https://sublime.security/articles/api-based-email-security-vs-traditional-seg/), [Adaptive](https://www.adaptivesecurity.com/blog/what-is-api-based-email-security-architecture-benefits-and-how-it-compares-to-secure-email-gateways)). So my ordering is weighted toward API-native, with real SEGs lower down. ## What I'd actually recommend, in order **1. Abnormal Security** - My default pick for a remote team on M365 or Google Workspace. API-deployed in under an hour, no MX change, and it's the strongest product on the exact threat that costs remote companies money: behavioral BEC and vendor fraud. Rated 4.8/5 on G2 with "ease of admin" at 9.5 - matters when you don't have a dedicated email admin. Downside: detection logic is a black box. **2. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (Plan 2)** - If you're on M365 E5, you already own it. Check this before buying anything. Safe Links/Safe Attachments plus automated investigation gets a small remote team to a genuinely decent baseline for $0 marginal spend. Weakest against the sophisticated no-payload stuff, which is why people layer #1 or #3 on top. **3. Sublime Security** - Best choice if you have someone technical who *wants* to tune detections. Transparent, writeable detection rules (MQL) instead of a black box, covers inbound/outbound/internal, and has a genuinely usable free tier for small teams. Highest "meets requirements" score (9.5) of the API-native set. **4. Check Point Harmony Email & Collaboration** - Pick this if "email security" for you really means "collaboration security": it extends to Teams, Slack, OneDrive, and Drive, which is where remote work actually happens. Good value, bundles with other Check Point products. Caveat from reviews: the most complaints about false positives (29) and complexity (23) of the three I compared. **5. Barracuda Email Protection** - The pragmatic SMB answer at roughly $5/user/month. Fast to set up, bundles archiving and M365 backup, and covers spam/phishing/malware/ATO. Not the sharpest BEC detection, but the price-to-coverage ratio is hard to beat for a 20-100 person remote company. **6. Proofpoint** - The enterprise answer, and still the best raw threat intel if you're large, regulated, or need vendor-agnostic coverage across mixed mail platforms. Overkill and over-priced for a small remote team; Proofpoint Essentials is the SMB tier if you want the brand at a lower price point. **7. Mimecast** - Choose over Proofpoint specifically if you need the archiving and mail continuity (keep sending/receiving when Exchange Online is down) in one contract. They've also shipped a faster, gateway-free deployment option recently, narrowing the API gap. **8. Material Security** - Not a filter; don't buy it as your only layer. It protects what's *already sitting* in mailboxes - years of invoices, contracts, password resets - which is the real blast radius after one remote employee gets phished. Excellent complement to #1 or #3. ## If you want the short version Small remote team, M365 E5 → **Defender P2**, then add **Sublime** (free tier) and see if you need more. Small remote team, anything else → **Abnormal** if budget allows, **Barracuda** if not. Add **Material** once you're past ~200 seats. Pricing figures here are from comparison aggregators and move around a lot - treat them as directional and get a real quote.
