The answer, as recorded

For agency work the ranking changes from a normal "best database" list, because two things dominate: per-client cost when a project is idle, and whether you can hand the database to the client without rebuilding it. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Neon** - my default recommendation for agencies. Serverless Postgres with scale-to-zero, so the eight client projects sitting in staging or in a quiet post-launch month cost cents, not a per-hour instance fee each. Launch is $19/mo, Scale $69/mo. Its branching (copy-on-write) means a per-client dev/preview branch is nearly free, and it's the only provider here with a real **claimable database / project transfer** flow - you provision on the client's behalf, send a claim URL, and ownership moves to their account. That's the agency pain point solved directly. Caveat: the transfer feature is private preview, so you have to ask their partnership team to turn it on. **2. Supabase** - pick this when the client needs more than a database. You get Postgres plus auth, storage, realtime, and auto-generated APIs, which kills a lot of backend work on marketing sites, portals, and MVPs. Free tier for pitches and prototypes, Pro $25/mo per org, Team $599/mo. Organization-based billing lets you separate clients cleanly. The weak spot is exactly the handoff: cross-org project transfer is still a long-requested, not-fully-shipped feature, so plan the ownership story before you start, not after. **3. Amazon RDS / Aurora** - what you use when the client is an enterprise, has a procurement or compliance checklist, or already lives in AWS. RDS is the broad managed SQL workhorse; Aurora is the one for scale and global deployments. It's the most expensive to idle and the most operational overhead, but "it's on AWS in your own account" closes deals that nothing else will, and handoff is trivial because it was always in their account. **4. DigitalOcean Managed Databases** - the predictability play. Flat, legible monthly pricing for Postgres/MySQL/Redis that you can put on a client invoice without a surprise egress line. Not the most featureful, but when you're reselling hosting and need a number you can mark up, this is the one. **5. PlanetScale** - only if the stack is MySQL. Vitess under the hood, non-blocking schema changes (genuinely great for iterating on a live client site), horizontal sharding when it matters. But there's no free tier since 2024 and the floor is $39/mo per database, which is rough if you're carrying a dozen small clients. **6. MongoDB Atlas** - the specialist. Name it only when the app is already document-oriented; don't choose it to be clever. Practical shape I'd suggest: Neon as the house standard, Supabase when the project needs auth/storage bundled, RDS when the client's procurement team says so. And decide at kickoff whether you own the account or they do - billing-in-your-name is a nice recurring revenue line right up until the relationship ends. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
