The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd reach for them for agency work: **1. Neon** - my default for Postgres client work. As of August 2026 it has org-level roles plus per-project permissions, so you can keep dozens of client environments under one account with each client scoped to only their own project (Viewer/Editor/Admin per project, plus a "Collaborator" role that gets nothing until you grant it). Thousands of projects are included in the plan, scale-to-zero means dormant client sites cost nearly nothing, and database branching gives you a throwaway staging copy per PR. Pricing is usage-based (~$0.106/CU-hour + $0.35/GB-month) with no monthly minimum since Dec 2025. **2. Supabase** - pick this when the client needs more than a database. At ~$25-31/month for Pro you also get Auth, Storage, Realtime, and Edge Functions, which for a typical small client app replaces three other vendors. Neon and PlanetScale are database-only. Downside for agencies: one project per instance means costs stack linearly across clients, and the jump to Team is $599/month. **3. DigitalOcean Managed Databases** - the one I'd choose when predictable billing and clean client handoff matter more than features. Flat pricing from $15/month with backups, monitoring, and HA included rather than metered, which means no surprise invoice you have to explain to a client, and no I/O or data-transfer line items. Covers Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, Valkey, Kafka, OpenSearch. **4. AWS RDS / Aurora** - not because it's better, but because some clients mandate AWS or are already there, and it's the only one of these with Oracle and SQL Server. Expect to spend real time on cost modeling: separate charges for instance, storage, I/O, backup retention, and transfer. Only worth it on engagements that can absorb that overhead. **5. PlanetScale** - for the client with genuinely high-traffic MySQL. The $39/month 3-node HA Vitess cluster is strong value for what it is, and their Postgres product went GA in August 2026 starting at $5/month single-node. Caveat: no free tier on either product since 2024, so every client project costs money from day one - bad fit for prototypes. **6. Aiven** - for compliance-heavy or multi-cloud clients. Plan-based SLAs and real multi-cloud portability across Postgres/MySQL and more. Watch the pricing cliff: it jumps from about $5 to $250 between tiers, and BYOC is enterprise-only. **7. MongoDB Atlas** - only if the client's data model is genuinely document-shaped. Don't choose it by default. **8. Kinsta** - worth naming if you're a WordPress/managed-hosting agency; their managed database offering sits alongside the app hosting you're already selling, so it's one invoice and one support contact. One agency-specific thing none of the comparison articles covered well, and I'd verify directly with the provider before committing: how ownership transfer works when a client leaves or wants to take the database in-house. DigitalOcean and AWS make account-level handoff straightforward; the serverless platforms are easier to administer day-to-day but messier to hand over cleanly. Decide upfront whether you're holding the account or the client is - that choice constrains which of the above actually works for you more than any feature on this list.
