# Best construction management software There's no single winner - the right answer splits hard along **what you build** (commercial vs. residential) and **company size**. Here's how I'd rank them, in order: **1. Procore** - The default pick for commercial general contractors. Best-in-class RFIs, submittals, drawing/document control, compliance tracking, and the deepest integration ecosystem. It's the industry standard for a reason, and subs will already know it. Downside: expensive (priced on annual construction volume, often well into five figures/year) and overkill if you're doing residential remodels. **2. Buildertrend** - The one I'd name first for **residential** builders and remodelers. Scheduling, selections, client portal, change orders, and CRM in one place. Its client-facing tools are genuinely the best in the category - homeowners get a portal instead of 40 text threads. Custom pricing. **3. Autodesk Construction Cloud / Autodesk Build** - Best if BIM and design coordination matter. Built on the former PlanGrid, so field drawing access is excellent, and model coordination with Revit is native. Strong for enterprise GCs and anyone doing design-build or complex MEP coordination. **4. Contractor Foreman** - Best value, full stop. $49/mo basic up to ~$332/mo unlimited users (annual billing). Covers estimating, scheduling, time tracking, daily logs, invoicing. The UI is less polished than Procore's, but for a small-to-mid firm it does 80% of the job at 5% of the cost. **5. JobTread** - The strongest newer challenger for residential/specialty contractors. $199/mo plus $20/internal user, free implementation and training, no contract. Its estimating-to-budget-to-actuals flow is unusually clean, and the cost database is a real advantage for firms doing repeatable work. **6. Fieldwire** - If your pain is specifically *field* execution - punch lists, task assignment, plan markup on an iPad - rather than back-office. Cheap, fast, and crews actually use it. Often run alongside something else. **7. CoConstruct** - Custom home builders and remodelers; now part of Buildertrend. Still worth a look for single-family custom work. ## If accounting is the real bottleneck Project management software is not construction accounting, and conflating the two is the most common and most expensive mistake in this purchase: - **Sage Intacct Construction** - Best for MEP and specialty trade contractors. Strong WIP, retainage, change orders, multi-entity. - **Trimble Viewpoint Vista** - Large, complex contractors needing deep job costing, certified payroll, equipment and service management on one platform. - **CMiC** - Enterprise ERP for large GCs running big portfolios where financials and PM must be a single system. - **Foundation** or **Sage 300 CRE** - Solid mid-market construction accounting; commonly paired with Procore. ## How I'd actually choose A very common and effective setup is **Procore (or Buildertrend) for operations + a real construction accounting system behind it**, rather than one tool trying to do both. Shortlist two, run a pilot on one live job, and weight field adoption heavily - the best software is the one your foremen will open on a phone in the rain. Also confirm who owns your data and how you'd export it; switching costs here are brutal.
