The question asked, verbatim: best code repository hosting for agencies

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. GitHub recommended
GitHub (Team → Enterprise Cloud) - the default pick
  2. Bitbucket Cloud mentioned
Bitbucket Cloud - if you run delivery in Jira
  3. Jira mentioned
Bitbucket Cloud - if you run delivery in Jira
  4. Confluence mentioned
The native Jira/Confluence tie-in is the real reason to pick it: if your PM layer is already Jira, branch-to-ticket linkage comes free instead of being an integration you maintain.
  5. GitLab mentioned
GitLab - best structural fit, worst price
  6. GitHub Team mentioned
But Premium is $29/user/mo - ~7x GitHub Team - and you need Premium for the approval rules agencies usually want.
  7. Self-hosted Forgejo mentioned
Self-hosted Forgejo or Gitea - when client seats are the problem
  8. Forgejo mentioned
Self-hosted Forgejo or Gitea - when client seats are the problem
  9. Gitea mentioned
Self-hosted Forgejo or Gitea - when client seats are the problem
  10. per-seat mentioned
Runs in ~512MB RAM on a cheap VPS, so flat infrastructure cost instead of per-seat.
  11. Azure mentioned
Azure DevOps Repos - only for .NET/Microsoft-shop clients
  12. Azure DevOps mentioned
Azure DevOps Repos - only for .NET/Microsoft-shop clients
  13. Azure DevOps Repos mentioned
Azure DevOps Repos - only for .NET/Microsoft-shop clients
  14. Microsoft mentioned
Azure DevOps Repos - only for .NET/Microsoft-shop clients
  15. Entra ID mentioned
First 5 users free, and if the client's infrastructure is Azure and their identity is Entra ID, hosting the repo in their tenant sidesteps the whole access-and-handover conversation.
  16. AWS mentioned
One to avoid: AWS CodeCommit still shows up in older "best repo hosting" listicles, but AWS closed it to new customers in 2024 - don't start a client there even if you're all-in on AWS.

The answer, as recorded

Searched. Here's what I'd actually recommend for an agency, in order: ## 1. GitHub (Team → Enterprise Cloud) - the default pick $4/user/mo on Team. Why it wins for agencies: your developers and your clients' in-house developers already know it, so handover is a non-event - you transfer the repo to the client's org and walk away. The clean agency pattern is **one org per client** (keeps billing, secrets, and Actions logs isolated, and makes offboarding a single action). Actions covers CI without extra vendors. Budget caveat: GitHub **bills outside collaborators** on private repos, and counts each person once across your orgs - so client-side reviewers cost seats. Enterprise Cloud is worth it once you need SAML, multiple orgs under one bill, and internal repos for shared boilerplate. [pricing](https://toolradar.com/tools/github/pricing) · [outside collaborator billing](https://docs.github.com/en/billing/reference/github-license-users) ## 2. Bitbucket Cloud - if you run delivery in Jira Cheapest credible option at ~$3.30-3.65/user/mo Standard, $6.60 Premium (adds deployment permissions + 3,500 build min/user). The native Jira/Confluence tie-in is the real reason to pick it: if your PM layer is already Jira, branch-to-ticket linkage comes free instead of being an integration you maintain. Free for up to 5 users, which suits a small shop. [comparison](https://tech-insider.org/sv/github-vs-gitlab-vs-bitbucket-2026/) · [price tracking](https://www.saaspricepulse.com/tools/bitbucket) ## 3. GitLab - best structural fit, worst price Groups/subgroups map almost perfectly onto agency→client→project, and CI/CD, container registry, SAST/dependency scanning, and planning are all in one app rather than bolted on. But Premium is **$29/user/mo** - ~7x GitHub Team - and you need Premium for the approval rules agencies usually want. Pick it if you're selling security/compliance work as part of the engagement. [pricing](https://guptadeepak.com/tools/top-5-git-hosting-platforms-2026/) ## 4. Self-hosted Forgejo or Gitea - when client seats are the problem The one option where adding ten client stakeholders as reviewers costs $0. Runs in ~512MB RAM on a cheap VPS, so flat infrastructure cost instead of per-seat. Forgejo if you want foundation governance; Gitea if you want the larger ecosystem. Trade-off is that *you* are now the on-call for the server, and some enterprise clients will refuse code hosted on agency-run infra. Skip GitLab CE here - 16GB RAM/8 vCPU to boot is not worth it unless you genuinely need its built-in CI. [comparison](https://dasroot.net/posts/2026/01/self-hosted-git-platforms-gitlab-gitea-forgejo-2026/) · [elest.io](https://blog.elest.io/gitea-vs-forgejo-vs-gitlab-which-self-hosted-git-server-in-2026/) ## 5. Azure DevOps Repos - only for .NET/Microsoft-shop clients First 5 users free, and if the client's infrastructure is Azure and their identity is Entra ID, hosting the repo in their tenant sidesteps the whole access-and-handover conversation. Otherwise it's a worse GitHub. **One to avoid:** AWS CodeCommit still shows up in older "best repo hosting" listicles, but AWS closed it to new customers in 2024 - don't start a client there even if you're all-in on AWS. [example of an outdated listicle](https://aloa.co/blog/what-is-code-repository-best-code-repo-hosting-2024) **If you want one answer:** GitHub, one org per client, Team plan, upgrade to Enterprise Cloud when you pass ~5 active clients or a client demands SSO. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
