The answer, as recorded
Reading your question as: *you run an agency (or studio/consultancy) and need someone to brand or rebrand it.* That's a genuinely different buy from ordinary brand work - your buyers are the most design-literate audience there is, and the hard part is usually positioning, not the logo. Here's who I'd actually name, roughly in the order I'd approach them. ## Positioning first (do this before any design) **1. Punctuation - David C. Baker.** The default for agency positioning in the US/UK market. No design, no identity: it's a focused engagement on what you specialize in and who you're irrelevant to. Baker has advised 1,000+ firms and wrote the books most agency owners rebrand *because* of. If your rebrand is really a "we look like everyone else and can't charge enough" problem, this is the highest-leverage spend and the cheapest line item - then take the output to a design studio. **2. Hinge Marketing.** Research-based branding for professional-services firms, agencies included. Less fashionable than the London studios, more rigorous: they run ongoing research on buyers of professional services (data from tens of thousands of firms and buyers) and will do positioning → identity → website as one program. Minimum project around $10k+, roughly $200-300/hr. Pick them if you want evidence and a working website over a portfolio piece. ## Identity and brand craft **3. Ragged Edge (London).** My first call for an agency that wants a brand with a point of view. Founded 2007, built on refusing average, and they've done exactly this job for peers - the new identity system for creative studio Coffee & TV is theirs. They also rebranded themselves in Aug 2025 ("Never be the same again"), which tells you they take their own medicine. Strong on verbal + attitude, not just marks. **4. Motto (NY/London/Berlin/Dallas).** Best fit when the agency brand is tangled up with the founders' vision and the leadership team doesn't agree yet - their process is built around leadership alignment and "ideas worth rallying around," which is the usual blocker in a partner-run firm. Work for Microsoft, Google, Klaviyo, Goodnotes; they rebranded themselves in 2021-22 and wrote it up publicly, which is a useful read before you brief anyone. **5. Koto.** The choice when your site *is* your brand - they build systems that survive contact with digital rather than identities that only look good in a case-study deck. Good for studios that sell product/digital work and need the brand to prove craft in motion and in code. **6. Dusted (London).** Independent, City of London, brand reinvention for tech and finance B2B, and one of the design agencies that rebranded itself in the recent wave. Mid-market budgets, senior attention, less likely to put a junior team on you than a big-name shop at the same fee. ## Only if you're holdco-scale **7. Collins, Pentagram, Wolff Olins, Landor.** These are the right answer when the rebrand is a business-change event with a merger or new positioning behind it - Landor is explicitly strongest when branding is a business project, not a design project, and Pentagram's partner model means you hire a named partner rather than an account team. Expect six figures minimum and often well into seven. For a 20-60 person independent, the signal value rarely justifies the fee; for a network agency or post-merger entity (the Jack Morton relaunch after the Impact XM merger is the pattern), it does. ## Two things worth knowing - **Ignore the ranked listicles.** DesignRush, Clutch-derived "top 15," and most "best branding agencies 2026" posts are directory-driven or pay-to-play, and the agency-run ones exist to rank for the keyword. I'd weight the-brandidentity.com, Design Week, and Creative Boom credits instead - look at who actually signed recent agency rebrands you admire, then hire them. - **Don't buy identity before positioning.** A lot of agencies are rebranding right now (Ragged Edge, Dusted, Elmwood, Fifty Thousand Feet all in the same window), and the ones that wasted the money bought a visual refresh when the problem was that they couldn't say what they were for. Sequence it: Punctuation or Hinge for the decision, then Ragged Edge / Motto / Koto / Dusted to build it. Sources: - [Punctuation / David C. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
