## My short answer For most freelancers, a full-service bookkeeping *firm* is overkill - you have one revenue stream and a few dozen expenses a month. Start with cheap software, add a human at tax time. Here's the order I'd actually recommend: ### DIY software (what 90% of freelancers should use) **1. Wave - start here if you're on a budget.** Core bookkeeping, bank imports, reports, and invoicing are genuinely free (not a trial). You pay only for payments processing and payroll. For a solo freelancer under ~$100k, it's often all you need. **2. QuickBooks Solopreneur (~$20/mo) or QuickBooks Online Simple Start.** The boring, safe default: every accountant in the US already knows it, so handing off your books at tax time is frictionless. Solopreneur replaced QuickBooks Self-Employed (that product was retired in Jan 2025) and does automatic business/personal transaction splitting, mileage, and quarterly tax estimates. Pick Solopreneur if you'll never have employees; pick Online Simple Start if you might grow, because Solopreneur doesn't upgrade cleanly. **3. FreshBooks - best if invoicing *is* your workflow.** Consultants, designers, writers, agencies: billable hours, retainers, chasing late clients. Its bookkeeping is thinner than QuickBooks', but the invoicing and time-tracking side is the nicest of the bunch. **4. Zoho Books - best value for project-based work.** Strong project accounting (income/expenses/billing per client) at a low price, with a free tier for very small revenue and the best mobile app in the category. Worth it especially if you already use other Zoho tools. **5. Xero - if you're multi-currency or about to stop being solo.** Better than QuickBooks for international clients and subcontractors, and unlimited users on every plan. ### Done-for-you (a real human does your books) **6. Bench - the main full-service option at freelancer prices.** Dedicated bookkeepers plus a platform, monthly close, year-end financials. One caveat you should know: Bench abruptly shut down in late Dec 2024 and was rescued days later by Employer.com. It's operating normally in 2026, but go in knowing the history, and keep your own exported copies of your books. **7. Xendoo or 1-800Accountant - cheaper, steadier alternatives to Bench** if that history bothers you. Monthly bookkeeping plus tax filing bundled. **8. A local CPA or independent bookkeeper on a quarterly retainer.** Honestly my favorite option for freelancers earning real money: you do the data entry in QuickBooks or Wave, and pay a human a few hundred dollars a quarter to review, handle estimated taxes, and advise on things software can't - S-corp election, home office, retirement accounts. Cheaper than full-service and more valuable. I'd skip **Pilot** - it's excellent but priced and built for venture-backed startups, not freelancers. **Sources:** - [NerdWallet - Best Accounting Software for Freelancers and Self-Employed](https://www.nerdwallet.com/best/small-business/freelancer-accounting-software) - [Fit Small Business - Best Accounting Software for Freelancers](https://fitsmallbusiness.com/best-accounting-software-for-freelancers/) - [Fit Small Business - Best Online Bookkeeping Services for Freelancers](https://fitsmallbusiness.com/best-online-bookkeeping-services-for-freelancers/) - [Fit Small Business - QuickBooks Solopreneur Review](https://fitsmallbusiness.com/quickbooks-solopreneur-review/) - [TechRepublic - Freelancer Accounting Software](https://www.techrepublic.com/article/freelancer-accounting-software/) - [American Banker - Why Employer.com bought Bench days after it shut down](https://americanbanker.com/news/why-employer-com-bought-fintech-bench-days-after-it-shut-down) - [Wikipedia - Bench Accounting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bench_Accounting)

Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
