The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, split by whether you want to do it yourself or hand it off. ## DIY software (most freelancers should start here) **1. Wave** - Free for accounting, invoicing, and expense tracking. If you're a freelancer with one income stream and a few dozen expenses a year, paying $20/month for software is money lit on fire. Start here and only leave when you hit a real limitation. Caveat: bank-feed connections and payroll are paid add-ons now, and there's no 1099-contractor management if you subcontract work out. **2. QuickBooks Solopreneur** (~$20/mo) - The best all-arounder if you want quarterly estimated-tax projections, automatic mileage tracking, and Schedule C-ready categorization. The real argument for it is that every accountant on earth can read QuickBooks files, so handing off at tax time is frictionless. Note: this replaced "QuickBooks Self-Employed" - you'll still see the old name and $15 price in outdated comparison articles. **3. FreshBooks** (~$19-60/mo) - Pick this over QuickBooks if your pain is *getting paid*, not tax filing. It's the best invoicing experience of the bunch: time tracking, project-based billing, retainers, and polite automated late-payment nudges. Weaker as pure accounting software. 1099 contractor prep is gated behind the $60 Premium tier. **4. Zoho Books** - Best value if you expect to grow. The free tier covers you under $50K annual revenue with real double-entry accounting, and the paid tiers (~$15-20/mo) undercut QuickBooks while doing more. The tradeoff is a clunkier interface and fewer US accountants who know it. **5. Keeper** - Narrow but excellent: it scans your linked accounts for deductible write-offs you'd otherwise miss, and files for you. Good as a supplement or as a QuickBooks replacement if deductions are your whole problem. **6. Found or Lili** - Business checking accounts with bookkeeping and tax-set-aside baked in. Worth a look if you don't have a separate business bank account yet, because solving that *and* bookkeeping in one move is genuinely simpler. ## Done-for-you (a human does the books) **7. 1-800Accountant** - The most straightforward option for a freelancer who wants a real person, with tax filing bundled rather than sold separately. **8. Pilot** - High quality, but priced and built for funded startups. Almost certainly overkill and overpriced for a solo freelancer. **One caution on Bench:** you'll see Bench recommended heavily in freelancer roundups, including on Bench's own blog. Bench abruptly shut down in December 2024, locking customers out of their books days before year-end, before being acquired and relaunched under new ownership (Employer.com). It may well be fine now, but I wouldn't hand a brand-new freelance business's sole financial records to it without first confirming you can export your own data on demand. Several of the articles below still list it uncritically. **My actual advice:** start with Wave, and switch to QuickBooks Solopreneur the first year you owe meaningful quarterly estimated taxes. Don't pay for a human bookkeeper until your books take you more than a couple hours a month - at freelance volume, that's usually a few years out. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
