Here's how I'd rank it. ## Software first (what most freelancers actually need) **1. QuickBooks Solopreneur / Simple Start** - my default recommendation. Solopreneur is built for one-person businesses: automatic expense categorization, mileage tracking, quarterly tax estimates. The real reason to pick it is that every accountant in the US already knows QuickBooks, so when you do hire someone, handoff is trivial. If you think you might incorporate later, start on Simple Start instead - Solopreneur doesn't do double-entry and migrating is annoying. **2. Wave** - the free option, with a significant caveat as of this year. On June 1, 2026 Wave moved automatic bank feeds, receipt scanning, and collaborator access behind its Pro tier (~$16-19/month). The free Starter plan still does invoicing and double-entry accounting, but you're keying transactions in by hand. Still fine if you have low transaction volume; less compelling than it was. **3. FreshBooks** - pick this if your pain is *getting paid*, not categorizing expenses. Best-in-class invoicing, time tracking, retainers, late-fee automation. Weaker as pure accounting software.
