Searched. Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd consider them - the right pick depends mostly on whether you have servers or just laptops plus SaaS. ## If you have servers or VMs (the classic "we run our own stuff" small business) **1. Veeam - Data Platform Essentials.** My default recommendation and the one I'd name first. It's the market leader by a wide margin (~12.8% mindshare in disaster recovery vs ~1.5-1.9% for Acronis and Datto), the Essentials bundle is licensed specifically for small shops, and it does image-level backup of VMware/Hyper-V, physical Windows/Linux, and Microsoft 365 from one console. Immutable backups, instant VM recovery, and a huge community so answers to problems are a search away. Downside: it assumes someone semi-technical is driving. **2. Synology Active Backup for Business.** The best value in backup, full stop, *if* you're willing to buy a NAS. The software is free and license-free with the hardware - one purchase covers unlimited endpoints and servers (PCs, Hyper-V/VMware, file servers, M365) with no recurring fees. Agent-based image backup with global dedup. Pair it with Hyper Backup pushing an encrypted copy to Backblaze B2 or Synology C2 so you aren't single-site. Caveat: the NAS itself is a single point of failure, so the offsite copy isn't optional. **3. Acronis Cyber Protect.** Pick this over Veeam if you have no real IT staff and want one agent that does backup, anti-ransomware, patching, and remote management together. It's genuinely the strongest at endpoint/cyber integration; it's weaker than Veeam on large virtualized recovery and the licensing/upsell experience is the common complaint. **4. Datto (now Kaseya) SIRIS / BCDR.** Only worth naming if you're buying through a managed service provider - Datto doesn't really sell direct. What you get is an appliance with instant local virtualization plus cloud failover, so a dead server is running again in minutes. Premium price, and you're tied to the MSP relationship. **5. Axcient x360Recover, Unitrends, or BDRSuite** as the budget alternatives in this tier. Axcient and Unitrends both do image backup with instant virtualization (Unitrends' Recovery Assurance actually auto-boots backups to prove they restore, which is a feature I like a lot), and BDRSuite is the cheapest credible option covering VMware/Hyper-V/Windows/Linux/M365 in one console. Also MSP-channel-leaning. ## If it's laptops and desktops only **6. Backblaze Business Backup.** The one I recommend to non-technical owners. Unlimited storage per computer at a flat ~$99/year/computer, with central admin, SSO, and 2FA. Install it and forget it. It's file backup, not bare-metal imaging, so it's for "recover my data," not "recover my server in 15 minutes." **7. IDrive 360.** Better than Backblaze if you want a real central console, device management, and bare-metal/image options across a fleet, and it's cheap at small scale. Pricing is storage-and-device-based rather than flat-unlimited, so it gets expensive fast as device counts climb. **8. MSP360 (formerly CloudBerry).** Worth naming for the specific case where you want to own your storage - it backs up to your own AWS S3, Backblaze B2, or Wasabi bucket, so you control the cost curve and the data. More assembly required. ## For Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace (please don't skip this) Microsoft and Google replicate your data; they don't protect you from a user deleting a mailbox or ransomware encrypting OneDrive. Retention windows are short. **9. Afi.ai.** Currently the one I'd name first for SMBs - cloud-native, covers Exchange/OneDrive/SharePoint/Teams and Google Workspace, unlimited retention, immutable versions, ransomware detection, around $3/user/month. Scored top in recent TechRepublic roundups. **10. Keepit or AvePoint** as the more established enterprise-leaning alternatives, **Datto SaaS Protection (Backupify)** if you're already in the Datto/MSP world, and **Microsoft 365 Backup** (Microsoft's own, pay-as-you-go) if you want it inside your existing Microsoft billing and don't need it to go anywhere else. **SpinOne** is a reasonable Google-Workspace-first pick. ## What actually matters more than the product choice Three things, in this order: an **immutable or air-gapped copy** so ransomware can't encrypt your backups too; **3-2-1** (three copies, two media, one offsite); and **test restores on a schedule** - quarterly, written down. Most small-business backup failures I've seen aren't "we had no backup," they're "the backup had been silently failing for seven months" or "nobody had ever tried restoring it." Whichever tool you pick, turn on failure alerting to a human who reads it. If you want one answer and nothing else: **servers → Veeam Essentials; a NAS you're happy to buy → Synology ABB plus Backblaze B2 offsite; laptops only → Backblaze Business; and Afi.ai for M365/Workspace regardless.** Prices and mindshare figures above are from the sources below and shift, so confirm current pricing at purchase.
