The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest looking at them. Most small businesses need two or three of these, not one - laptops, servers, and Microsoft 365 are genuinely different problems. **1. Veeam - the default for anything with a server** Best overall if you have even one physical or virtual server. Image-level backups, instant VM recovery, bare-metal restore, and the free Community Edition covers up to 10 workloads, which is enough for a lot of small shops. Paid licensing runs around $250/workload/year. It's the most widely used backup product in business, so help and documented procedures are everywhere. ([costbench](https://costbench.com/compare/acronis-vs-veeam/), [cbackup](https://www.cbackup.com/best/veeam-vs-acronis-2578.html)) **2. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 - if you use M365 or Google Workspace** This is the gap most small businesses don't know they have: Microsoft does not back up your tenant for you, and the retention policies in M365 are not backup. Around $2/user/month annual covers Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. If you'd rather not run it yourself, **Afi.ai** or **CloudAlly** are fully SaaS alternatives with less setup. ([itechguides](https://www.itechguides.com/best/microsoft-365-backup-software/), [NAKIVO](https://www.nakivo.com/blog/m365-backup-strategies-small-business/)) **3. IDrive Team - best single-vendor option for a laptop-only business** If you have no servers and just a pile of Windows/Mac machines, this is the easiest good answer: multi-device backup, one admin console, file versioning, cheap. It consistently scores highest on user satisfaction in the small-business category rather than just on feature checklists. ([G2](https://learn.g2.com/online-backup-software-for-small-businesses)) **4. Acronis Cyber Protect - if you want backup and security in one agent** Backup plus anti-ransomware, patch management, and endpoint management from a single agent and console, from roughly $68/workload/year. Worth it mainly if you have no IT staff and want fewer tools to manage; if you already have decent endpoint security, you're paying twice. ([costbench](https://costbench.com/compare/acronis-vs-veeam/)) **5. Backblaze - the cheap, boring layer underneath everything** Two separate products worth knowing: **Computer Backup** at a flat per-computer price with unlimited storage, which runs without employees thinking about it, and **B2 Cloud Storage**, which is S3-compatible and makes an excellent cheap offsite target for Veeam. The B2 pairing is the one I'd point most people at. ([itechguides](https://www.itechguides.com/best/microsoft-365-backup-software/)) **6. Synology NAS with Active Backup for Business - best value if you want hardware onsite** Active Backup is included free with the NAS; it covers PCs, servers, VMs, and M365, and M365 licensing is by storage rather than per user, which gets cheap as you grow. Fast local restores. Pair it with B2 for offsite. ([itechguides](https://www.itechguides.com/best/microsoft-365-backup-software/)) **7. Datto / NinjaOne - if you work through an MSP** Datto is sold almost exclusively through managed service providers, so you pick it by picking your IT provider. NinjaOne rates very well and makes sense if you already use it for endpoint management. ([G2](https://learn.g2.com/online-backup-software-for-private-businesses), [toolradar](https://toolradar.com/compare/datto-vs-veeam)) Two honest caveats. First, several of the pages ranking for this query are low-quality affiliate aggregators, and their pricing figures and claims - one asserted Acronis is "98% more affordable than Veeam," which is not a real comparison - should not be trusted. Get quotes directly from vendors. Second, and more important than the product choice: whatever you pick, keep three copies on two media with one offsite and immutable or air-gapped, and do a test restore quarterly. Untested backups fail at exactly the moment you need them, and ransomware specifically hunts for reachable backup targets. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
