# Best APM for startups My honest take: most startups need **error tracking first, tracing second, and full-stack APM only when they have enough traffic to justify the bill.** Here's what I'd actually pick, in order. ### 1. Sentry - start here This is the first thing I'd install at almost any startup. It answers the question you actually have at 2am: *which exception, on which line, for which user.* Metrics tell you a service is degraded; Sentry tells you why. Free Developer plan covers 1 user and 5,000 errors/month; Team is $26/mo billed annually. It has grown real tracing and profiling too, so for many small teams it's the only tool you need. ### 2. Grafana Cloud - best free tier if you want real observability The most generous permanent free tier of the serious platforms: 10k metric series, 50GB logs, 50GB traces, 14-day retention. Pro is $19/mo base + usage (~$0.40/GB for logs). Open backends, Prometheus/Loki/Tempo, OpenTelemetry-native - so no vendor lock-in and you can self-host later if the bill grows. Downside: more assembly required than Datadog. ### 3. New Relic - best "full platform, no credit card" option 100GB ingest/month free, forever, with one full user and unlimited basic users, plus 50+ capabilities and no trial clock. If you want real APM - flame graphs, transaction traces, database query analysis - without a procurement conversation, this is the highest-ceiling free tier out there. The catch is the per-user pricing once your team grows past one engineer who needs full access. ### 4. Datadog - only if you qualify for the startup program Best-in-class product, genuinely correlated traces/logs/metrics/RUM, and the reason everyone complains about it is the bill, not the quality. No permanent free tier (14-day trial; infra free for 5 hosts). **But**: Datadog for Startups gives up to $100k in credits over a year if you've raised under $40M, were founded in the last 5 years, have under 200 employees, and are affiliated with a Datadog VC partner or accelerator. If you qualify, take it - just build with OpenTelemetry so you can leave when the credits expire. ### 5. Axiom - if you're log-heavy 500GB/month free ingest, $25/mo to start, 95%+ compression and unlimited retention with storage decoupled from query cost. Not a full APM, but if your costs are being driven by log volume, this is dramatically cheaper than Datadog or New Relic. ### 6. Better Stack - if you want uptime + logs + on-call in one Free plan includes 3GB of logs/metrics/traces; paid from $29/mo per responder. Unified data model, queryable via SQL or PromQL, and it bundles status pages and incident paging - which consolidates two or three vendors for a small team. **Worth naming but situational:** **LogRocket** if you're a frontend/product team and session replay matters more than backend traces (it's the highest-rated of this group on G2 at 4.6). **Dynatrace** and **IBM Instana** show up at the top of every ranked list and both are excellent - auto-discovery, AI root-cause - but they're enterprise-priced and enterprise-sold; I wouldn't point a startup at them. **My default recommendation:** Sentry + Grafana Cloud, instrumented with OpenTelemetry. Together that's roughly free until you have real traffic, covers errors and traces and dashboards, and the OTel layer means switching to Datadog later is a config change rather than a rewrite. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
