The question asked, verbatim: best application performance monitoring for startups
Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Sentry recommended
Sentry - Start here if you're a small team shipping product.
- Datadog recommended
It's also listed among the top Datadog alternatives as of 2026.
- Postgres recommended
Caveat: it's weak on infrastructure metrics - it tells you your app is sad, not that your Postgres box is out of IOPS.
- Grafana Cloud recommended
Grafana Cloud - Best value if anyone on your team has DevOps instincts.
- OpenTelemetry recommended
It's OpenTelemetry-native, so you're not locked in - you can self-host the same stack later if the bill grows.
- APM recommended
Datadog - The one to pick if you want everything correlated in one pane and you'd rather pay than fiddle: APM, infra, logs, RUM, and security together, with the broadest integration catalog.
- New Relic recommended
New Relic - The pricing-model pick.
- Better Stack recommended
Better Stack - If you want uptime checks, logs, and on-call/incident management in one simple product rather than a deep APM.
- LogRocket recommended
LogRocket (or PostHog, if you also want analytics) - Not a replacement for the above, but the frontend-specific pick: session replay tied to errors and network calls.
- PostHog recommended

- Dynatrace mentioned
Ones I'd skip at startup stage: Dynatrace and IBM Instana.
- IBM mentioned
Ones I'd skip at startup stage: Dynatrace and IBM Instana.
- IBM Instana mentioned
Ones I'd skip at startup stage: Dynatrace and IBM Instana.
- Sentry + Grafana Cloud mentioned
My default for a <20-person team: Sentry + Grafana Cloud, both on free/cheap tiers, and migrate to Datadog only when the cost of your team's time stitching things together exceeds Datadog's invoice.
- Rollbar mentioned

The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd try them: **1. Sentry** - Start here if you're a small team shipping product. It began as error tracking and now does tracing, performance, session replay, and profiling, with the best signal-to-noise for "what broke and in which line of code." Generous free tier, cheap first paid tier, and the SDK install is genuinely 10 minutes. It's also listed among the top Datadog alternatives as of 2026. Caveat: it's weak on infrastructure metrics - it tells you your app is sad, not that your Postgres box is out of IOPS. **2. Grafana Cloud** - Best value if anyone on your team has DevOps instincts. The free tier is unusually real: 10k active metric series, 50GB logs, 50GB traces, 14-day retention. It's OpenTelemetry-native, so you're not locked in - you can self-host the same stack later if the bill grows. Traces run ~$0.45/GB beyond free. The cost is complexity: you assemble dashboards rather than get them handed to you. **3. Datadog** - The one to pick if you want everything correlated in one pane and you'd rather pay than fiddle: APM, infra, logs, RUM, and security together, with the broadest integration catalog. List is ~$31-35/host/month for APM, plus indexed-span overage. Two warnings: the free tier is really just a demo, and per-host-plus-ingest pricing is the classic startup bill shock - set budget alerts on day one. Also worth checking their startup program for credits. **4. New Relic** - The pricing-model pick. Per-GB ingest (~$0.25-0.40/GB after 100GB free monthly) with free users, which is usually the cheapest path if you have many small containers rather than a few big hosts - the opposite of Datadog's math. Full-stack coverage; UI is less loved than Datadog's. **5. Better Stack** - If you want uptime checks, logs, and on-call/incident management in one simple product rather than a deep APM. Good fit for a pre-PMF team that mostly needs "is it up, and who gets paged." **6. LogRocket** (or PostHog, if you also want analytics) - Not a replacement for the above, but the frontend-specific pick: session replay tied to errors and network calls. If your product is a web app and your bugs are mostly "user says it's broken, can't reproduce," this pays for itself fast. Ones I'd skip at startup stage: **Dynatrace** and **IBM Instana**. Both are excellent and technically strong on AI root-cause and auto-instrumentation, but they're priced and sold for enterprises (~$58/host for Dynatrace) and you'll spend more time in procurement than in the product. My default for a <20-person team: **Sentry + Grafana Cloud**, both on free/cheap tiers, and migrate to Datadog only when the cost of your team's time stitching things together exceeds Datadog's invoice. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
