Brands named, in the order the engine gave
- Sentry mentioned
Sentry - Start here.

Its weakness is infrastructure metrics - it won't tell you your Postgres connection pool is exhausted.
- New Relic mentioned
New Relic - The best value if you want a full platform rather than just app-level errors.
- Grafana Cloud mentioned
Grafana Cloud - Pick this if you're already committed to OpenTelemetry and Prometheus and want no vendor lock-in on instrumentation.
- OpenTelemetry mentioned

- Better Stack mentioned
Better Stack - Worth a look if what you actually need is uptime monitoring, logs, and on-call paging rather than deep tracing.
- SigNoz mentioned

## What I'd actually recommend **1. Sentry** - Start here. For most startups, "APM" in practice means "why did this request fail or get slow," and Sentry answers that better than anything else at seed stage. Error tracking plus tracing in one tool, SDK setup is genuinely 15 minutes, and the traces link straight to the stack trace and release that broke things. Free Developer plan to start; Team is $26/mo with 50K errors and 5M spans. Its weakness is infrastructure metrics - it won't tell you your Postgres connection pool is exhausted. **2. New Relic** - The best value if you want a full platform rather than just app-level errors. 100 GB/month of free ingest, perpetual, no credit card, with unlimited basic users and access to everything (APM, infra, logs, serverless). Then $0.35/GB. For a pre-Series B team, that frequently means $0/month for real APM. The UI is dense and the user-tier model is the thing to read carefully - "full platform users" are what actually cost money. **3. Grafana Cloud** - Pick this if you're already committed to OpenTelemetry and Prometheus and want no vendor lock-in on instrumentation. Free tier is 10k metric series, 50 GB each of logs/traces/profiles, 3 active users. You own your instrumentation layer, so migrating off later is cheap. The tradeoff is assembly required - you're wiring up dashboards and alerts yourself rather than getting them out of the box. **4. Better Stack** - Worth a look if what you actually need is uptime monitoring, logs, and on-call paging rather than deep tracing. Cheap, fast to set up, and covers the "is it down and who gets woken up" problem that a lot of small teams conflate with APM. **5. SigNoz** - The option if you're outgrowing a free tier and getting quotes from Datadog that make you wince. OTel-native, self-hostable, Cloud starts around $49/mo base with usage pricing (~$0.30/GB logs and traces). Good data ownership story. Smaller ecosystem and you'll hit rougher edges than with the incumbents. **Datadog** I'd skip at startup stage. It's excellent and you may well end up there at Series B+, but the free tier is crippled (5 hosts, 1-day retention, no APM or logs) and host-based pricing bites early - roughly $15-23/host/month plus another ~$31/host for APM tracing. Twenty hosts with APM and logs lands in the low thousands per month. ## Practical take Instrument with **OpenTelemetry** regardless of which vendor you choose. All five above accept OTel data, and it turns a future migration from a rewrite into a config change. The single most common expensive mistake here is instrumenting with a proprietary agent and then discovering the bill at 50 engineers. If you want one answer: **Sentry for errors and traces now, New Relic's free tier alongside it for infra and logs.** That combination costs近 nothing and covers ~90% of what you'll need before Series A. One caveat on the pricing: several of the comparison sites that surface on this query are low-quality SEO pages, so I've stuck to vendor pricing pages for the numbers above. Verify current figures directly before you commit - these change often. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
