How to report a fake vacation rental site
Report it to the four parties that can actually hurt it, in this order: the domain's registrar and hosting provider (abuse contacts via rdap.org), search engines (de-indexing), safe-browsing programs (browser warnings), and a government fraud portal for the record. Site owners ignore you; their providers can't.
1. Registrar and host - the takedown pair
Look the domain up at rdap.org or lookup.icann.org. Email both abuse contacts with:
- the fraudulent URL and what it's doing (collecting rental deposits with stolen media),
- your evidence: screenshots, saved pages, dates, and - if you're the property owner - your original listing,
- a DMCA notice (Section 512) if your photos or text were copied; copyright reports carry procedural weight that "this looks scammy" doesn't.
Registrars can suspend domains; hosts can null a site. Either kills the operation.
2. Search engines - cut discovery
- Google's legal removal tool for copyright-based removal from results.
- Both Google and Bing accept spam/scam reports on indexed pages via their webmaster channels.
3. Safe-browsing - warn every future visitor
Flag the site at Google Safe Browsing . Confirmed reports put a full-screen warning in front of the site in most browsers - often before the takedown completes.
4. Government fraud portals - build the record
- US: reportfraud.ftc.gov and, for internet crime with losses, IC3.
- UK: Action Fraud.
- EU: your national consumer-protection or police cyber portal.
Individual reports rarely trigger individual action, but they aggregate into cases - and a report number strengthens your registrar/host emails and helps victims' bank-recall claims.
