The answer, as recorded

"Remote team" splits into two very different tools, so here's both branches - pick by whether your people work *shifts* or *projects*. ## If your remote team works shifts / set hours (support, ops, dispatch, distributed frontline) 1. **Deputy** - my default pick. Best balance of auto-scheduling (it forecasts demand and fills the roster), real compliance handling for state-specific overtime and break rules, and payroll integrations into ADP, Gusto, Xero, QuickBooks. ~$5/user/month, and generally cheaper than When I Work at comparable feature tiers. Used across ~365,000 workplaces, so the edge cases are well-worn. 2. **When I Work** - cheapest serious option at ~$2.50/user/month, and the one I'd name for small-to-midsize teams who just want a clean roster. Auto-assign, color-coded schedules, visible availability, painless shift swaps and time-off requests. Less compliance depth than Deputy. 3. **Connecteam** - the one to pick if scheduling is only half the problem. It bundles scheduling with chat, time tracking, training, and HR into a mobile-first app, which matters when your people have no desk and no company laptop. Free for up to 10 users; paid runs $35-$99/month for up to 30 users, so it's unusually cheap at small scale. 4. **Microsoft Shifts** - if you're already on Microsoft Teams, it's included. Thin compared to the above, but zero marginal cost and zero new login. 5. **Homebase** - genuinely usable free tier, but only really works for a single location. 6. **Workforce.com** or **Shiftboard** - step up to these only for complex, high-compliance, enterprise-scale rostering. Overkill otherwise. ## If your remote team is project/knowledge work (agencies, dev, design, consulting) Then you don't want shift software, you want resource scheduling: 1. **Resource Guru** - my pick here. Explicit multi-time-zone coordination, which is the actual pain of a distributed team, plus fast drag-and-drop scheduling and real-time workload visibility. Rates 4.7/5. 2. **Float** - very close second, and the better choice if your priority is longer-range forecasting and capacity planning rather than week-to-week booking. 4.5/5. 3. **Hubstaff** - only if you also want time tracking and activity monitoring; scheduling is a secondary, premium add-on there. Worth saying plainly: monitoring features tend to cost you trust with remote staff, so adopt it for billing accuracy, not surveillance. **Short version:** remote shift work → **Deputy**, or **When I Work** if budget-driven, or **Connecteam** if they're phone-only. Remote project work → **Resource Guru**, or **Float** if you're forecasting capacity months out. One flag: the first search surfaced "Schedly" as a top recommendation, but that content is from Schedly's own blog marketing itself, and it's a meeting/booking-link tool rather than workforce scheduling. I left it off deliberately. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
