The answer, as recorded

The honest framing first: "business VPN" means two different products, and most small businesses buy the wrong one. If you want employees to reach internal servers, a NAS, a staging environment, or a cloud VPC, you want a remote-access/ZTNA tool. If you just want encrypted traffic on hotel Wi-Fi and some geo-flexibility, you want a consumer VPN with team billing. My picks in each, in the order I'd actually suggest them: **For team remote access (the one most SMBs actually need)** 1. **Tailscale** - my default recommendation for teams under ~50 people. WireGuard-based mesh, essentially zero config, no firewall ports to open, and the free tier covers 3 users/100 devices so you can prove it works before paying. Engineers love it; non-technical staff can still install it in a minute. 2. **Twingate** - pick this over Tailscale if you care about per-resource access control rather than a flat network. It grants access to a specific host or app by FQDN/IP instead of putting people "on the network," which is the right model if you have contractors or compliance pressure. Also has a free tier. 3. **Cloudflare Zero Trust (Access + WARP)** - best value if you're already on Cloudflare. Free for up to 50 users, then around $7/user/month, and it brings device posture and app-level gating with it. Downside: it's part of a bigger platform, so there's more to learn. 4. **NordLayer** - the most "turnkey business VPN" of the group, roughly $7-$14/user/month. Dedicated IPs, site-to-site, SSO with Okta/Entra ID, and a simple admin console. Choose it when you want a vendor with an account manager and a single bill rather than something you self-assemble. 5. **OpenVPN Access Server / CloudConnexa** - the self-hosted option. Cheapest at small scale and you own the whole stack, but it costs you time and someone has to maintain it. Worth it only if you already have IT capacity. **For privacy/encrypted browsing with team billing** 6. **Proton VPN Business** - strongest privacy posture of the commercial options (Swiss jurisdiction, audited, open-source clients), with central user management, and paid tiers start around $3-$8/user/month. This is my pick if the goal is confidentiality rather than internal network access. 7. **NordVPN Teams / Surfshark** - fine, cheap, and Surfshark's unlimited device count is genuinely useful for a small crew with lots of laptops and phones. But neither solves remote access, so don't buy them expecting that. What I'd do with no other information: start with Tailscale's or Cloudflare's free tier this week, and only move to NordLayer if you find you need the managed hand-holding. One caveat worth saying plainly - a VPN is not endpoint security. If the underlying worry is "are we secure," MFA everywhere and managed devices will buy you more than any product on this list. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
