## What I'd actually recommend **1. Better Stack** - My default pick for a funded startup. It bundles uptime checks (30s intervals, multi-region), on-call scheduling/paging, incident management, and genuinely good-looking hosted status pages into one tool. The reason it's first: most startups end up buying uptime monitoring, an on-call rotation (PagerDuty), and a status page (Statuspage) separately, and Better Stack collapses all three. Free tier is ~10 monitors; paid starts around $25-34/mo. **2. UptimeRobot** - The right answer if you want to spend nothing and be done in ten minutes. 50 monitors free at 5-minute intervals is still the most generous free tier in the category, and paid plans start at ~$7/mo if you need 1-minute checks and SSL/domain expiry alerts. It won't page a rotation or do deep diagnostics, but it will reliably tell you the site is down. **3. Uptime Kuma** - Self-hosted, open source, one Docker container, $0 forever. Unlimited monitors, 90+ notification integrations, a decent status page. Pick this if you're pre-revenue and already have a VPS. The real caveat: **host it somewhere other than your production infrastructure**, or the same outage takes down your monitoring. Also no on-call escalation - it just fires webhooks. **4. Checkly** - Best choice if your product is an API or a complex web app. It's monitoring-as-code (Playwright scripts, Terraform/CLI-defined checks) rather than ping-a-URL, so your synthetic tests live in your repo and run in CI. Overkill for a marketing site, excellent for a SaaS with critical user flows like signup and checkout. **5. Cronitor** - The one people forget. If you have background jobs, cron tasks, queue workers, or scheduled billing runs, you need *dead man's switch* monitoring - alerts when something **doesn't** happen. Cronitor does this plus regular uptime checks. Healthchecks.io is the free/self-hostable equivalent if you only need the cron piece. **6. StatusCake / HetrixTools** - Solid budget alternatives to UptimeRobot. HetrixTools is notable for 1-minute checks on its free tier (15 monitors) and blacklist monitoring, which matters if you send transactional email. **7. Grafana Cloud or New Relic** - Only if you're already committed to one for logs/metrics/APM. Their synthetic monitoring is adequate rather than great, but consolidating billing and dashboards has real value, and both have usable free tiers. ### How I'd actually sequence it Day one: UptimeRobot or Uptime Kuma, free, on your main domain and health endpoint. Once you have customers who notice outages before you do, move to Better Stack for the on-call and status page. Add Checkly when a silent partial failure (login broken, checkout 500ing, API returning 200 with garbage) would cost you more than a full outage - that's the failure mode plain uptime pings miss entirely. One caveat on sourcing: a lot of "best uptime monitoring 2026" listicles are published by monitoring vendors ranking themselves first. The rankings above are my own judgment on feature set and fit, not those lists. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
