## My actual shortlist for agency work **1. Better Stack (Uptime)** - My default recommendation if you have more than a couple of people who get paged. It's uptime + SSL/DNS/cron monitoring bundled with real incident management: on-call schedules, escalation policies, phone-call alerts, and status pages. The free tier is generous enough to pilot; paid responder plans start around $29/mo with monitors and status pages billed on top. The catch is that it's a broader observability platform (logs, tracing, RUM), so you pay for surface area you may not touch. **2. Oh Dear** - The one I'd point a web/WordPress agency at first on value. Uptime plus full-site crawling for broken links and mixed content, Lighthouse audits, DNS change detection, domain expiry, cron/heartbeat checks, and application health - and **unlimited users on every plan**, which matters a lot when you're 5+ people. Entry pricing is in the high-teens per month. The site-count-based pricing is the thing to model out if you have 30+ clients. **3. StatusCake** - Pick this if you want a tool that does website monitoring and nothing else, reliably. Uptime, page speed, SSL, domain expiry, basic server monitoring, and white-label status pages on paid plans. Superior is ~$25/mo, Business ~$67/mo. Boring in the good way; no incident-management pretensions. **4. Hyperping** - Worth naming specifically because it markets to agencies: clean white-label status pages on each *client's* own custom domain. If the status page is the client-facing deliverable you're selling, this is the cleanest execution of that. **5. UptimeRobot** - Still the most familiar name, and I'm naming it mostly as a warning. Since **October 2024 the free plan is personal, non-commercial use only** - monitoring client sites for money puts you outside the ToS. If you're on it, Solo is ~$9-10/mo and Team ~$38-45/mo. Fine product, just don't assume the free tier you set up in 2021 is still legitimate. **6. Pingdom** - Only if a client contract or an existing SolarWinds relationship names it. Real synthetic + RUM data, but it's the expensive incumbent and per-check pricing punishes the 100+ monitor portfolio an agency accumulates. ## The two things that actually decide it Budget **3-5 monitors per client site** (homepage, admin login, key conversion path, SSL cert) - 25 clients is 100+ monitors, not 25. And **avoid per-seat pricing** if your team is 3 or more; that's where Oh Dear's unlimited users beats tools that look cheaper on the sticker. One caveat on my own search results: a lot of what surfaces for "agency uptime monitoring" is SEO content from very small vendors (Notifier, Uptimeify, FlareWarden, Tracefox, Pulsetic). Some may be perfectly good, and a few advertise exactly what agencies want - unlimited client sub-accounts, branded reports through your own SMTP, no per-client charges. But I wouldn't put a 40-client book of business on a tool I can't verify has been around a few years. The six above are the ones I'd actually stake a retainer on.
