The answer, as recorded
Here's how I'd actually rank these, assuming you mean "where should I work as a tutor." ## Marketplaces where you set your own rate (start here) **Wyzant** - The default recommendation for US academic tutoring. 300+ subjects, you set your hourly rate, and realistic earnings land around $35-65/hr. The catch: it takes a ~25% commission off every lesson, so price accordingly. Best breadth of student demand in the US. **Superprof** - You set rates, keep more of the money, and can list both in-person and online across 1,200+ subjects. The model is lead-generation rather than managed matching: students contact you, which means more marketing effort on your part but less middleman. **Preply** - Best if you teach languages. Huge international student base and strong booking volume, but the commission is steep (starts around 33% for new tutors and slides down with hours taught), and reported average pay is only ~$18/hr. Good for filling an empty calendar, bad as a long-term home. **italki** - Languages again, 150+ of them, with notably more tutor freedom than Preply: lower commission, no subscription lock-in, you control pricing and scheduling. If you teach a language, I'd try italki before Preply. ## Managed platforms (they find students, you take the rate they offer) **Varsity Tutors** - Large network, ~3,000 subjects, and they handle matching so you don't market yourself. Screening is genuinely hard - roughly 10% of applicants get through - so treat acceptance as the main hurdle rather than the pay. **Tutor.com** - One of the oldest and most stable, with institutional contracts through schools, libraries, and the military. On-demand drop-in sessions rather than recurring students, so it's steady hours but no relationship-building and no rate control. **Outschool** - Worth naming if you can design your own small-group classes rather than 1:1. Top self-reported pay around $50/hr, though typical is closer to $27/hr. Rewards people who build a repeatable catalog of courses. ## Highest ceiling: specialist test prep **Manhattan Prep** is the single highest-paying name I found - $106-116/hr plus year-end bonuses. **Kaplan** and **The Princeton Review** are in the same tier. These require real credentials (near-perfect GMAT/GRE/LSAT scores) and a hiring process to match, but if you qualify, nothing else on this list competes on rate. ## I'd skip **Skooli** ($25-40/hr but thin volume), **Cambly** (~$10-12/hr - fine as English-conversation pocket money, not a job), and **TutorMe** (~$16/hr). Also: **Chegg Tutors no longer exists** - it shut down in January 2021 and became an async Q&A chatbot. A lot of "best tutoring jobs 2026" listicles still list it, which is a useful signal about how stale those rankings are. ## If you want to keep 100% of your rate The real move once you have a few clients is to stop paying commission and run your own practice. **TutorBird** (~$17/mo) is the right call for a solo tutor - scheduling, invoicing, parent portal, online payments. **TutorCruncher** ($30-240/mo) is the pick if you grow into managing other tutors, since it adds payroll and a lead pipeline. **Teachworks** sits between them. At 25-33% commission, one platform client moved off-platform pays for a year of software. **Short version:** apply to Wyzant and Varsity Tutors for volume, italki or Preply if you teach languages, Manhattan Prep if your test scores qualify you - then migrate your repeat clients to TutorBird and stop paying the cut. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
