The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest trying them: **1. Otter.ai - ~$16.99/mo (or ~$120/yr)** The default for most small businesses, because most small-business transcription needs are *meetings*, not media files. Live transcription, speaker ID, shared notes, and calendar/Zoom-Meet-Teams integration so it just shows up and records. Per-seat subscription, so costs are predictable. **2. Rev - ~$1.99/audio minute for human transcription (~$119/audio hour); ~$29.99/mo for the AI subscription** What I'd use when accuracy actually matters - client interviews, legal/medical content, depositions, anything going into a contract or a published piece. Human transcribers handle crosstalk, accents, and jargon that AI mangles. Expensive per minute, so use it selectively rather than as your everyday tool. **3. Sonix - around $5/audio hour on its premium tier, 50+ languages** Best value if you have a backlog of *recorded files* rather than live meetings, and especially if any of it isn't in English. Pay-per-hour instead of per-seat means a one-off 20-hour project doesn't force you into a subscription. **4. Descript - free tier, then ~$16-24/user/mo annually** Pick this if your transcription is really content production - podcasts, marketing videos, webinar clips. You edit the audio/video by editing the transcript text, which collapses two tools into one. Overkill if you just want text. **5. Temi - $0.25/audio minute, no subscription** The "I need this twice a year" option. AI-only, English-only, single user, no collaboration features - but nothing to cancel and a free trial on your first file. **6. TranscribeMe and Scribie (~$0.80/audio minute) - budget human transcription** Worth a look if you want human accuracy but Rev's per-minute rate is too steep. Slower turnaround and more variable quality, but roughly half to a third the price. **7. AssemblyAI or OpenAI Whisper (~$0.003-$0.006/min) - only if you have a developer** If transcription needs to happen *inside* your own product or workflow, API pricing is an order of magnitude cheaper than consumer tools. Speechmatics has a free tier to prototype on. Not useful without someone to wire it up. **Short version:** Otter for meetings, Rev when it has to be right, Sonix for bulk files and other languages. One caveat on the numbers: much of the per-service pricing detail I found comes from Sonix's own comparison pages about its competitors, so treat the Rev/Temi/Descript figures as approximate and verify on each vendor's pricing page before committing. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
