The question asked, verbatim: best trademark registration services for startups

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. ID Manual mentioned
First, the number that matters: the USPTO itself charges $350 per class, and since Jan 2025 there's one base fee plus surcharges (+$200 if you write a custom goods/services description instead of picking from the ID Manual, +$100 for incomplete info).
  2. flat-fee mentioned
A flat-fee trademark attorney - Gerben IP or Cognition IP.
  3. Gerben IP mentioned
A flat-fee trademark attorney - Gerben IP or Cognition IP.
  4. Cognition IP mentioned
A flat-fee trademark attorney - Gerben IP or Cognition IP.
  5. LegalZoom mentioned
Expensive next to LegalZoom, but the search is the product - knocking out a doomed name before you've printed anything is worth more than the filing itself.
  6. Trademark Engine mentioned
    Trademark Engine - ~$100 + USPTO fees.
  7. Engine mentioned
    Trademark Engine - ~$100 + USPTO fees.
  8. Trademarkia mentioned
Trademarkia - for search and monitoring, not filing.
  9. Bizee mentioned
Bizee (formerly Incfile) - $199 + USPTO fees - only if you're already forming the entity there and want it bundled.
  10. Rocket Lawyer mentioned
Rocket Lawyer - only worth it if you want a subscription covering contracts, NDAs, and employment docs alongside the trademark.
  11. Y Combinator mentioned
    - Cognition IP (Y Combinator) (https://ycombinator.com/companies/cognition-ip)

# Trademark registration for startups - who I'd actually use First, the number that matters: the USPTO itself charges **$350 per class**, and since Jan 2025 there's one base fee plus surcharges (+$200 if you write a custom goods/services description instead of picking from the ID Manual, +$100 for incomplete info). Every service below is a fee *on top* of that. Writing your description straight from the ID Manual is the single easiest way to save $200/class, and it's the thing cheap filing services most often get wrong. **1. A flat-fee trademark attorney - Gerben IP or Cognition IP.** This is my real recommendation for a startup that intends to raise money or has a name it's attached to. Gerben IP charges a flat $3,000 + $350/class and does a comprehensive federal, state, *and* common-law search before filing. Cognition IP (YC-backed, flat-fee, doesn't bill for emails) is the better fit if you also want patents and ongoing IP counsel from the same firm. Expensive next to LegalZoom, but the search is the product - knocking out a doomed name before you've printed anything is worth more than the filing itself. **2. LegalZoom - $899 + USPTO fees.** The sane default if $3,000 isn't happening. You get an actual attorney assigned, plus a free second application if the first fails (they cite an 85% success rate on that basis). Trade-off: the attorney reaches out within ~20 days and filing averages ~50 days, so it's slow, and the search is narrower than a real clearance search. **3. Trademark Engine - ~$100 + USPTO fees.** Cheapest credible option. It's a form-filler with optional attorney add-ons - fine when your mark is a coined word with nothing close to it, which you've already verified yourself in TESS. Don't use it for a descriptive or suggestive mark; that's exactly the case that draws a 2(d)/2(e) refusal and then you're hiring a lawyer anyway, at a worse moment. **4. Trademarkia - for search and monitoring, not filing.** Its search database is the strongest of the consumer tools. I'd use it free to pressure-test a name shortlist before spending anything, and for watch/monitoring after registration. **5. Bizee (formerly Incfile) - $199 + USPTO fees** - only if you're already forming the entity there and want it bundled. Convenience, not quality. **6. Rocket Lawyer** - only worth it if you want a subscription covering contracts, NDAs, and employment docs alongside the trademark. As a trademark service alone it's unremarkable. What I'd skip: anything promising "trademark registration" for under $100 all-in, and the "trademark monitoring" upsells that are really just USPTO/private-registry solicitations in disguise. One thing to decide before you pick: file an **intent-to-use (1(b))** application now if the product isn't launched, or **use-based (1(a))** if it's selling. Services handle both, but 1(b) means a later Statement of Use with another fee - budget for it. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
