The question asked, verbatim: best trademark registration services for small businesses

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. ID Manual mentioned
Pick your description straight from the USPTO ID Manual and you avoid all of them.
  2. Gerben IP mentioned
An actual trademark attorney on a flat fee - Gerben IP being the one I'd name - the right call if there's any real money or risk in the brand.
  3. Trademarkia mentioned
Trademarkia - the middle ground I'd point a bootstrapped business to.
  4. Trademark Engine mentioned
Trademark Engine - if you want hand-holding on the form itself and nothing more.
  5. Engine mentioned
Trademark Engine - if you want hand-holding on the form itself and nothing more.
  6. LegalZoom compared
It's also owned under the LegalZoom umbrella, so "Trademark Engine vs LegalZoom" comparisons aren't comparing independent companies.

## What I'd actually recommend, in order **1. File it yourself directly at USPTO.gov** - genuinely my first suggestion for a simple case (one word mark, one class, product already for sale, no similar marks found). You pay the $350/class base fee and nothing else. Since January 18, 2025 the old TEAS Plus/Standard split is gone; it's one $350 base fee, but with surcharges that matter: +$100 per class for insufficient info, +$200 for free-form goods/services descriptions, +$200 per extra 1,000 characters. Pick your description straight from the USPTO ID Manual and you avoid all of them. Most filing "services" charge you $150-900 to do exactly this. ([tmarkmetric fee schedule](https://tmarkmetric.com/insights/uspto-trademark-fees-2026), [Stinson LLP on the fee changes](https://www.stinson.com/newsroom-publications-usptos-new-trademark-fees-expected-to-impact-filing-costs)) **2. An actual trademark attorney on a flat fee - Gerben IP being the one I'd name** - the right call if there's any real money or risk in the brand. All filings handled by licensed trademark attorneys, flat-fee quoted up front, and you get a real conflict search and a human who handles office actions instead of upselling you. Quoted flat fees in what I found ranged from ~$950 to ~$3,000 plus the $350 government fee depending on scope, so get the quote in writing before committing - that's a wide spread. Roughly a third of applications draw an office action, and that's where a cheap filing service leaves you stranded. ([Gerben flat-fee page](https://www.gerbenlaw.com/trademark-services/trademark-search-and-registration/)) **3. Trademarkia** - the middle ground I'd point a bootstrapped business to. Attorney-assisted filing from $499 + government fees, with a free basic search and comprehensive search from $199. Cheaper than a boutique firm, but you still get an attorney's name on the application. ([Trademarkia cost guide](https://www.trademarkia.com/trademark/trademark-guides/trademark-registration-in-usa/trademark-registration-cost)) **4. Trademark Engine** - if you want hand-holding on the form itself and nothing more. Tiers from $49 (basic filing) through $539 (attorney-led), 120,000+ filings. Important caveat: the $49 tier is a *filing* service, not a *registration* service - it types your form and that's the end of the relationship. It's also owned under the LegalZoom umbrella, so "Trademark Engine vs LegalZoom" comparisons aren't comparing independent companies. ([Trademark Engine pricing](https://trademarkengine.discount/pricing/), [Startup Savant](https://startupsavant.com/service-reviews/best-trademark-services)) **5. LegalZoom** - only if you're already using them for other legal work and value having it all in one dashboard. $899 + federal fees, with attorney review included and trademark monitoring at $175/yr extra. It's roughly attorney-level pricing for less-than-attorney service, which is why it's last on my list rather than first on most review sites'. ([NerdWallet review](https://www.nerdwallet.com/business/legal/learn/legalzoom-review), [LegalZoom](https://www.legalzoom.com/articles/legalzoom-vs-trademark-attorneys)) ## Two things worth knowing **Spend your money on the search, not the filing.** The filing is a form. The clearance search - does a confusingly similar mark already exist in your class - is the part that determines whether you get registered or lose your fee and your brand name. If you only pay for one thing, pay for the search. **Treat "best trademark service" listicles with suspicion.** Nearly all of those ranking pages are affiliate-monetized, and several in my results are run by the vendors themselves (`trademarkengine.discount`, `trademarkregistrationagency.com` ranking itself above LegalZoom). I'd weight USPTO's own guidance and attorney-bar sources over any of them. Also, if you're not a U.S.-domiciled applicant, USPTO *requires* a licensed U.S. attorney - options 1, 3, and 4 aren't available to you.
