The answer, as recorded

Here's how I'd rank them for a remote team: **1. Slack** - Still the default recommendation, and for good reason. Channel-based chat with genuinely good threading, Huddles (drop-in audio/video that doesn't require scheduling a meeting - hugely valuable when you can't tap someone on the shoulder), and the deepest integration ecosystem of anything in the category. Search is excellent, which matters more than people expect on a distributed team where chat becomes the institutional memory. Pro is ~$7.25/user/mo, Business+ ~$15. The real catch: the free tier only keeps 90 days of history, so remote teams almost always have to pay. **2. Microsoft Teams** - The right answer if you're already paying for Microsoft 365. Teams is bundled in, so the marginal cost is roughly zero, and Office/SharePoint/Outlook integration is seamless. Chat UX is clunkier than Slack and threading is weaker, but video meetings are solid and it scales well for larger orgs. Standalone starts around $4/user/mo; bundled M365 enterprise plans run much higher but you get everything else too. **3. Google Chat** - Same logic as Teams, for Google Workspace shops. It's not a great chat product on its own merits, but if you're already on Workspace it's free and sitting right next to Gmail, Docs, and Meet. Fine for small teams; I wouldn't pick it deliberately. **4. Zulip** - My pick for teams that are async-heavy or spread across many time zones. Its topic-within-channel threading model is genuinely different from everything else: conversations stay organized so someone logging on eight hours later can catch up on exactly the threads they care about instead of scrolling a firehose. Open source, self-hostable, and free for open-source/nonprofit use. Standard is ~$6.67/user/mo. Harder sell if your team wants the casual real-time vibe. **5. Discord** - Unconventional but legitimately good for small startups, dev teams, and community-adjacent orgs. Always-on voice channels create a kind of ambient co-presence that no business tool replicates well - people just hang out in a channel while working. Free to ~$4.99/mo. Downsides: weak search, no real admin/compliance tooling, and it looks unserious to clients. **6. Mattermost / Rocket.Chat** - Worth naming if you have self-hosting or data-residency requirements (regulated industries, government, security-sensitive work). Both are open source and Slack-like. More ops overhead, fewer integrations. **My actual advice:** if you don't already have a Microsoft or Google contract, use Slack and budget for Pro. If you do, use the one you're paying for - the switching cost usually isn't worth it. Pick Zulip only if your team is deliberately async; pick Mattermost only if compliance forces your hand. One thing to decide early regardless of tool: write down your norms on response-time expectations and what belongs in chat vs. docs. The tool matters much less than that. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
