Searched. Here's what I'd actually recommend, in order: ## 1. The IRS's own Form 990-N e-Postcard - free If your gross receipts are normally **$50,000 or less**, don't buy software at all. The IRS's e-Postcard system is free, takes about ten minutes, and asks for eight pieces of information. The single most common nonprofit tax mistake is a small org paying a vendor for something the IRS gives away. ([irs.gov](https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/e-file-for-charities-and-nonprofits), [irs.gov](https://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Exempt-Organizations-e-File-e-Postcard)) ## 2. Tax990 - best overall for a nonprofit filing its own return This is my default recommendation for anyone past the 990-N threshold. It covers the whole series (990-N, 990-EZ, 990, 990-PF, 990-T) plus state filings, so you don't have to switch vendors when you grow. All required schedules are included at no extra cost - important, since schedules are where competitors nickel-and-dime you. It has an internal audit check, prior-year import, interview-style *or* direct form entry, and free retransmission if the IRS rejects, free extensions, and a free first amendment. Pricing is **$99.90 for a 990-EZ and $199.90 for a full 990**, dropping to $89.90/$179.90 on prepaid credits at 5+ returns. ([tax990.com/pricing](https://tax990.com/pricing), [support.tax990.com](https://support.tax990.com/art/17694/what-services-are-included-in-the-pricing)) Note: **ExpressTaxExempt** is the same company's older brand name for this product - if you see both recommended, they're not two independent options. ## 3. File990.org - if you want the absolute simplest path for a volunteer treasurer Narrower than Tax990 (really aimed at 990-N and 990-EZ), but it's built for a board member who does this once a year and remembers nothing from last time. Auto-fills from your EIN and sends you filing reminders. Pick it over Tax990 only if simplicity matters more than room to grow. ([file990.org](https://www.file990.org/blog/best-nonprofit-tax-software-available-even-novice-treasurer)) ## 4. Aplos - if you need bookkeeping and the 990 in one place Aplos is fund-accounting software for nonprofits first, with 990-N and 990-EZ e-filing bolted on (it's been an IRS-approved e-file provider since 2012). Choose this when your real problem is that your books are a mess and the 990 is downstream of that. Don't buy Aplos *just* for the tax filing - and note the e-file side caps out at 990-EZ eligibility (up to $200,000 gross receipts / $500,000 assets), so a full 990 filer needs something else. ([wikipedia.com/wiki/Aplos_Software](https://www.wikipedia.com/wiki/Aplos_Software)) ## 5. Lacerte, ProConnect Tax, UltraTax CS, or CCH Axcess - only if you're a firm These are professional preparer platforms with multi-preparer review workflows and 990 modules. They're priced and designed for CPA firms handling many exempt clients, not for a single nonprofit. If someone points you here, what they're really telling you is to hire a CPA. ([capterra.com](https://www.capterra.com/p/10041549/Tax990/)) **Two things worth knowing:** TurboTax does **not** prepare Form 990 in any edition - people assume it does and lose time finding out. And if your return involves unrelated business income (990-T), significant foreign activity, or executive compensation disclosures on Schedule J, hire a CPA rather than buying software. The $200 you save on Tax990 isn't worth a reporting error on a public document that donors, grantmakers, and your state AG can all read. **Sources:** - https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/e-file-for-charities-and-nonprofits - https://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Exempt-Organizations-e-File-e-Postcard - https://tax990.com/pricing - https://support.tax990.com/art/17694/what-services-are-included-in-the-pricing - https://www.file990.org/blog/best-nonprofit-tax-software-available-even-novice-treasurer - https://www.wikipedia.com/wiki/Aplos_Software - https://www.capterra.com/p/10041549/Tax990/

Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
