The answer, as recorded
The honest answer is that "subscription box platform" splits into two different decisions, and which one you're in determines the whole shortlist. Here's who I'd actually name: ## If you want a box-native all-in-one (no Shopify) **1. Subbly** - My default recommendation for new or small box brands. It's purpose-built for boxes: curation, surveys/quizzes that feed product selection, prepaid plans, gifting, and box-specific churn tooling are native rather than bolted on. Starts around $34.50/mo + 1%, with a cheap starter tier for under ~10 subscribers. It also has the best support reputation of the box-native tools (4.8/5 across ~217 Capterra reviews vs Cratejoy's 4.3). **2. Cratejoy** - Worth it almost entirely for one reason: the marketplace. It's a built-in discovery channel with a few hundred thousand shoppers, which matters enormously if you have no audience yet. Flat $39/mo, 1.25% + $0.10 on your own storefront, but **11.25% + $0.10** on marketplace sales - treat the marketplace as a paid acquisition channel, not free traffic. The storefront itself is weaker and less customizable than Shopify. ## If you're on Shopify (what most serious brands end up doing) You keep your store, theme, apps, and customer data, and add a subscription layer. **3. Loop Subscriptions** - Best overall value at the moment. Strong box/bundle builder, good cancellation-flow and retention tooling, and the cheapest economics at scale: ~$399/mo + 0.75% at the Pro tier. At 10k subscription orders/mo on a $50 AOV that's ~$4,100/mo versus ~$9,100 for Recharge Plus. **4. Appstle Subscriptions** - The budget pick, and a genuinely good one. Free plan, paid tiers topping out around $100/mo, and **0% transaction fee** on paid plans. Feature depth is surprisingly wide. If you're under a few hundred subscribers, starting anywhere else is usually overpaying. **5. Recharge** - The incumbent and the safest "nobody gets fired for this" choice: deepest integration ecosystem, best agency/3PL familiarity, most mature API. The catch is price - $99/mo + 1% + $0.19/order at Standard, and the Plus tier's combined percentage *and* per-order fees compound badly as you grow. Note that Recharge reportedly acquired Skio (~$105M, April 2026), so Skio is now a Recharge-owned product; I'd factor that consolidation into any long-term bet on either. **6. Stay AI** - Pick this only if churn is your actual bottleneck and you have the volume to justify ~$499/mo + 1% + $0.19. Its value is the retention/experimentation layer (cancel-flow testing, churn prediction), not core subscription plumbing. **7. Bold Subscriptions** - Cheapest entry at ~$49.99/mo + 1% + $0.10, and competitive at scale (~$399.99/mo + 0.9%). I rank it below Loop mainly on product momentum and box-specific features, not on price. ## What I'd actually do - Pre-launch, no audience → **Cratejoy** for marketplace exposure, or **Subbly** if you'd rather own the brand from day one. - Real brand, under ~500 subscribers → **Shopify + Appstle**. - Scaling, $100k+/mo subscription GMV → **Shopify + Loop**, with **Recharge** as the alternative if your agency or stack strongly prefers it. One flag: migrating subscribers between platforms is painful - you're moving payment tokens, and some combinations force customers to re-enter card details, which reliably costs you a chunk of your base. Choose for where you'll be in two years, not where you are now. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
