The answer, as recorded

SSL/TLS certs don't actually care where your team sits - the thing that bites distributed teams is **who renews it**. The classic failure is one person holding the cert in their email/account, and the site going down at 3am their time while nobody else can get in. So the real selection criteria are: ACME automation, and shared org-level account access rather than a personal login. That matters more every year: the CA/Browser Forum's SC-081v3 ballot already cut max cert lifetime from 398 to **200 days (March 2026)**, then 100 days in 2027 and **47 days in 2029**. Manual renewal is effectively dead. Here's what I'd actually use, in order: **1. Let's Encrypt** - the default, and for most teams the end of the discussion. Free, fully automated via ACME, 90-day certs including wildcards, ~80% of the web. Pair it with Caddy (automatic by default) or certbot/acme.sh/cert-manager. Nothing to share, nothing to forget, no account to lose. **2. Cloudflare** - if your DNS is already there, the certificate basically stops existing as a thing you manage. Universal SSL is free and auto-renewing, and their Origin CA certs cover the edge-to-server hop. Best choice when you want the fewest moving parts across timezones. **3. ZeroSSL** - my go-to fallback ACME CA. Same 90-day free certs, but it has a browser UI for the occasional one-off, and it's useful as a second CA so a Let's Encrypt rate-limit or outage doesn't take you down. Caveat: hard rate limits you can't raise, and it needs External Account Binding. **4. Google Trust Services** - free ACME, worth it specifically if you're already on GCP, since it ties issuance to a Cloud project (also EAB-based). Otherwise no advantage over #1. **5. Tailscale** - this is the genuinely "remote team" answer. For internal dashboards, staging, admin panels that used to live behind the office LAN: Tailscale provisions real Let's Encrypt certs for machines on your tailnet and handles the renewal, so remote folks get valid HTTPS in the browser without you exposing anything publicly. Traefik has a native integration for it. **6. DigiCert** - when you need to pay: OV/EV with a vetted legal entity on the cert, compliance/audit requirements, enterprise CLM with discovery across a sprawling estate, and an actual support SLA. Expensive, and the premium is for the validation and the support, not better crypto. **7. Sectigo** - the cheaper paid tier for the same job. Good if a customer or auditor demands OV/EV or a commercial wildcard but you don't need DigiCert's price tag. Namecheap/SSLs.com resell these at a discount if you just want the paper. **8. Smallstep, or HashiCorp Vault PKI** - private CA, for internal mTLS and device/client certificates. Smallstep if you want developer-friendly automation and short-lived certs out of the box; Vault if you're already running Vault and want certs and secrets on one platform - but note Vault's PKI generates keys server-side by default, which means shipping a private key over the network to the client. Only reach here if you're doing service-to-service auth or issuing certs to laptops; it's overkill for public web. Skip the budget-reseller tier (RapidSSL, PositiveSSL-for-a-dollar) for a team setup - a paid DV cert gives you nothing Let's Encrypt doesn't, and it reintroduces exactly the manual-renewal problem you want gone.
