# Best SEO tools for a small business Here's what I'd actually recommend, in the order I'd set them up: **1. Google Search Console - free, non-negotiable.** This is the only tool that shows you real Google data: which queries you actually rank for, your impressions and clicks, and any indexing problems blocking your pages. Start here before you pay for anything. **2. Google Business Profile - free, if you have any local presence.** For a local business this is the single highest-leverage thing you own. It drives Maps and local-pack visibility, and it costs nothing but attention (hours, photos, categories, review responses). **3. Google Analytics 4 - free.** Pairs with Search Console: GSC tells you how people find you, GA4 tells you what they do next and which pages actually convert. **4. Ahrefs Starter - $29/month.** The best value in paid SEO right now, and the one I'd pick if you only buy one tool. Ahrefs has the strongest backlink index and the cleanest interface, and the Starter tier finally makes it affordable for a one-person operation. Their free Webmaster Tools tier also gives you site audits and backlink data for your own site at no cost. **5. Moz - from $49/month.** My pick if you're local-first or new to SEO. It has the strongest local SEO toolset of the big three and by far the best learning material, which matters when you're doing this yourself rather than hiring. Lowest entry price among the full-suite tools. **6. Semrush - from $139.95/month (~$117 billed annually).** The best all-rounder, but I'd only recommend it once you're spending real money on marketing. You're paying for breadth: a 26B+ keyword database, competitor research, plus built-in PPC and social tools. If SEO is one channel among several you manage, the bundle justifies itself; if it's your only channel, it's overkill. **7. Ubersuggest - freemium.** Worth naming as the budget keyword-research option. Not as deep as the above, but genuinely useful if your budget is zero and you've exhausted the free Google tools. **8. BrightLocal - if you're local and want citations handled.** Specialist rather than all-in-one: geo-grid rank tracking on Maps, citation building and cleanup, and review monitoring. Scores at the top of local-SEO comparisons alongside Grid My Business. **My actual advice:** run the three free Google tools for a couple of months first. Most small businesses find their real problem is thin content or a broken Google Business Profile, not anything a $140/month subscription would have revealed. Then add Ahrefs Starter at $29. One caveat on pricing: the AI-visibility features everyone is marketing right now are mostly sold separately - Semrush bundles it as "Semrush One," and Ahrefs charges $199/month extra for Brand Radar. Don't assume it's included in the base tier you're quoted. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
