The answer, as recorded

# Sales training for startups The honest framing first: what you need depends almost entirely on stage. Pre-Series A, the founder is the salesperson and no methodology workshop will fix a fuzzy ICP. Post-first-reps, you need a repeatable framework. Those are different products. Here's who I'd actually name, in order. ## If you're pre-PMF / founder still selling **1. Google for Startups Sales Academy** - Nine-week virtual program, free, built specifically for founders learning the full journey from awareness to advocacy. Cohort-based with other founders, which is half the value. Start here because the price is zero and the framing is correct for your stage. **2. Steli Efti's "SaaS Sales for Startup Founders" (Close.com)** - Free book/resource with scripts, frameworks, and the mindset stuff technical founders get stuck on. Written by someone who built a CRM company by cold calling. Read it in a weekend; it's the fastest way to stop being scared of the phone. **3. Higher Levels - Founder-Led Sales Accelerator** - Paid, but purpose-built for founders rather than repurposed rep training. Good if you want structure and accountability beyond self-study. **4. Your Startup Sales / Sales Process Catalyst** - 8-week course, pre-recorded plus weekly live Q&A, focused on building a custom sales process that survives past seven figures. This is the right buy at the moment you're about to hire rep #1 and need something to hand them. ## Once you have 2+ reps **5. Winning by Design** - The SaaS default for a reason. The Bowtie model and their recurring-revenue framing fit subscription businesses better than enterprise methodologies do. Individual certifications run roughly $500-$2,500, which is actually accessible; full engagements are $25K-150K+, which is not, early on. Buy the individual certs first. **6. pclub.io / Caliber** - Tactical, role-specific (SDR, AE, AM, CSM), taught by practitioners with a genuinely selective instructor bar. Best value per dollar for skills training. Caveat from reviewers that it's modular rather than one coherent system - treat it as a skills library, not your methodology. **7. JBarrows** - Narrow and good: outbound prospecting and pipeline generation. If your problem is specifically "top of funnel is empty," this beats a general program. **8. MEDDICC / MEDDPICC certification** - $297 for full, $597 for advanced. Cheap insurance once you're selling five-figure-plus deals to committees. The framework itself is more useful than most of the training around it. ## Who I'd skip, and why **Force Management** is excellent and wrong for you unless you're Series B+ with real enterprise deals and a manager layer to reinforce it. At $150K across fewer than 10 reps, that's $15K/rep - the ROI doesn't close. Same logic applies to Richardson and most enterprise methodology vendors. Pre-Series A you lack the stable ICP and process the training assumes exists. **Pavilion** is a community with courses attached, not a training program. Worth it for the peer network if you're a revenue leader; don't buy it expecting curriculum. ## What I'd actually do Google for Startups Sales Academy plus Efti's book, both free, this quarter. Then when you hire your first rep, spend money on Winning by Design certs and pclub.io seats rather than a big-ticket engagement. The expensive stuff is for when you have a machine to tune, not a machine to build.
