The question asked, verbatim: best retail analytics software for retail shops

Brands named, in the order the engine gave

  1. Lightspeed recommended
Lightspeed Retail (Lightspeed Analytics) is my top pick if you're buying fresh.
  2. Lightspeed Retail recommended
Lightspeed Retail (Lightspeed Analytics) is my top pick if you're buying fresh.
  3. Square mentioned
Square is the better call if you're a single small shop and want zero friction - the free tier's reporting is genuinely decent and the analyst ratings actually put it ahead of Lightspeed overall, mostly on ease of use and value.
  4. Dor recommended
    - Dor - my default recommendation for 1-20 stores.
  5. Shopify mentioned
~$150/month per location, published pricing, thermal sensor (no customer images, so it sidesteps most privacy objections), installs in minutes, and integrates with Shopify POS, Lightspeed and Vend so it computes real conversion automatically.
  6. Shopify POS mentioned
~$150/month per location, published pricing, thermal sensor (no customer images, so it sidesteps most privacy objections), installs in minutes, and integrates with Shopify POS, Lightspeed and Vend so it computes real conversion automatically.
  7. V-Count mentioned
    - V-Count - the value option, and one of the few with public pricing: sensors $299-$799 and BoostBI subscriptions $9-$49/month.
  8. RetailNext mentioned
    - RetailNext - genuinely the best-in-class platform (entrance path analytics, dwell time, occupancy), but quote-based per-store annual pricing and month-long rollouts.
  9. ShopperTrak mentioned
    - ShopperTrak (Sensormatic) - the incumbent, $30-200/month monitoring plus $200-2,000 hardware.
  10. Google Business Profile mentioned
Also: Google Business Profile Insights is free and tells you who searched for you, asked for directions or called.
  11. Google Business Profile Insights mentioned
Also: Google Business Profile Insights is free and tells you who searched for you, asked for directions or called.

  13. Microsoft 365 mentioned
    - Power BI (~$10/user/month) if you're already in Microsoft 365.
  14. Tableau mentioned
    - Tableau if visual analysis matters more than cost, at chain scale.
  15. Domo mentioned
    - Domo if you want prebuilt retail connectors and templates rather than building from scratch - but enterprise deployments of Domo or Tableau run $150,000+/year, which is why this layer is wrong for most shops.
  16. ThoughtSpot mentioned
    - ThoughtSpot if non-technical category managers need to ask questions in plain English.
  17. Square POS compared
    - Square POS vs Lightspeed Retail - SelectHub (https://www.selecthub.com/pos-software/square-pos-vs-lightspeed-retail/)

The answer, as recorded

For actual retail shops (physical stores), the honest answer is that "retail analytics software" splits into three layers, and most shops only need the first one or two. Here's what I'd actually name, in order: ## 1. Your POS's own analytics - start here **Lightspeed Retail (Lightspeed Analytics)** is my top pick if you're buying fresh. 40+ prebuilt reports across sales, inventory, marketing and staff performance, multi-location consolidation, demand forecasting that auto-suggests purchase-order quantities, and a natural-language layer that answers "what were my bestsellers last month" without building a report. It's the strongest reporting in the POS category, especially for large catalogs with variants (apparel, bike shops, wine, etc.). **Square** is the better call if you're a single small shop and want zero friction - the free tier's reporting is genuinely decent and the analyst ratings actually put it ahead of Lightspeed overall, mostly on ease of use and value. Lightspeed wins on depth; Square wins on getting started. Don't skip this layer and buy a BI tool. Exporting hourly/daily/SKU sales from your existing POS gets you peak hours, top products and day-of-week patterns for free. ## 2. Foot traffic / conversion - the thing your POS genuinely cannot see Your POS knows what sold, not how many people walked in and left empty-handed. That gap is your conversion rate, and it's the single highest-value metric a physical shop can add. - **Dor** - my default recommendation for 1-20 stores. ~$150/month per location, published pricing, thermal sensor (no customer images, so it sidesteps most privacy objections), installs in minutes, and integrates with Shopify POS, Lightspeed and Vend so it computes real conversion automatically. - **V-Count** - the value option, and one of the few with public pricing: sensors $299-$799 and BoostBI subscriptions $9-$49/month. Good if you'd rather own the hardware than rent it. - **RetailNext** - genuinely the best-in-class platform (entrance path analytics, dwell time, occupancy), but quote-based per-store annual pricing and month-long rollouts. Only worth it at real chain scale; skip it for a single site. - **ShopperTrak** (Sensormatic) - the incumbent, $30-200/month monitoring plus $200-2,000 hardware. Fine, but Dor and V-Count have eaten its lunch on price transparency and install speed. Also: **Google Business Profile Insights** is free and tells you who searched for you, asked for directions or called. Turn it on before you spend anything. ## 3. A BI layer - only once you have multiple data sources to join - **Power BI** (~$10/user/month) if you're already in Microsoft 365. Cheapest credible path to combined POS + traffic + e-commerce dashboards. - **Tableau** if visual analysis matters more than cost, at chain scale. - **Domo** if you want prebuilt retail connectors and templates rather than building from scratch - but enterprise deployments of Domo or Tableau run $150,000+/year, which is why this layer is wrong for most shops. - **ThoughtSpot** if non-technical category managers need to ask questions in plain English. **My actual recommendation:** Lightspeed (or Square if you're small) + Dor, and nothing else. That combination gets you sales, inventory, traffic and conversion for well under $400/month per store, and it'll answer 90% of the questions a shop actually has. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
