The answer, as recorded

"Restaurant management software" splits into a few different jobs, and no single product wins all of them. Here's what I'd actually recommend, in order: **1. Toast - the default for most restaurants.** Purpose-built for food service, not a retail POS with a restaurant skin. Handhelds for table service, kitchen display, online ordering, delivery dispatch, payroll, and loyalty all in one vendor. Hardware is spill- and grease-rated. Downsides: it's the priciest option, payment processing is locked to Toast, and contracts are typically multi-year. Best fit: full-service and growing multi-unit operations where server workflow matters more than monthly cost. **2. Square for Restaurants - best if you're small, new, or cost-sensitive.** There's a genuinely usable free tier, flat and predictable card rates, no long contract, and hardware you can buy off the shelf. Staff learn it in an afternoon. It thins out on deep inventory and complex coursing. Best fit: cafés, food trucks, counter-service, single locations. **3. Lightspeed Restaurant - best reporting and inventory.** The strongest analytics of the three, with ingredient-level inventory and better multi-location rollups. Good API access if you want to connect your own tools. Best fit: upscale venues and groups of roughly 5-30 sites. **4. TouchBistro - iPad-based, strong floor management.** Table-side ordering, floor plans, and bill splitting are well done, and it can run locally so a Wi-Fi drop doesn't kill service. Good for small-to-mid independents who want table-service depth without Toast's price. **5. Restaurant365 - this is the back office, not a POS.** Accounting, AP, inventory, recipe costing, and labor in one system, sitting on top of whatever POS you use. If your actual pain is "I don't know my food cost or prime cost," this is the answer, not a new POS. Best fit: multi-unit groups and franchisees. **6. 7shifts - labor scheduling and team comms.** Scheduling, shift swaps, labor forecasting against sales, tip pooling. Most operators run it alongside their POS rather than using the POS's built-in scheduler. **7. OpenTable or Resy - reservations and guest data.** OpenTable for discovery and cover volume; Resy for a more premium brand feel and a cheaper flat fee. Only relevant if you take bookings. My practical advice: pick the POS first, since it's the hardest thing to change later, then bolt on scheduling, reservations, and back-office as the pain shows up. Single location and unsure → Square. Full-service and planning to grow → Toast. Already multi-unit and bleeding margin → keep your POS and add Restaurant365. One caveat on sourcing: most of what surfaces for this query is affiliate-commission content, and the sites below rank products partly by payout. Treat the rankings as directional and get live quotes - Toast and Lightspeed both negotiate, and processing rates matter more to your P&L than software fees. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
