The answer, as recorded
For a cafe, the real choice comes down to about five systems, and the right one depends mostly on your volume and whether you serve food at tables. **1. Square for Restaurants** - my default recommendation for most independent cafes. The free tier is genuinely usable (no monthly software fee), hardware is cheap and available off the shelf, setup takes an afternoon, and modifier handling for drinks ("oat, extra shot, half-caff") is fast on the tile layout. Loyalty and online ordering are paid add-ons but cleanly integrated. Downside: payment processing rates are fixed and not negotiable, so at high volume you overpay. **2. Toast** - the better pick once you're doing real food volume or multiple locations. It's purpose-built for food service: strong kitchen display, ingredient-level inventory that tracks beans, milk, and pastry counts with low-stock alerts, and much deeper reporting than Square. Hardware is spill- and heat-resistant, which matters behind an espresso bar. Downsides: multi-year contracts, hardware is proprietary, and the quote-based pricing means you need to negotiate. **3. Lightspeed Restaurant** - choose this if you're a specialty shop selling retail bags, brew gear, and merch alongside drinks. Its inventory and purchasing tools are the best of the group, and it handles the retail-plus-cafe hybrid better than anyone. Costs more (core tiers around $59/month, with higher tiers well north of that, and KDS billed per screen), so it only pays off at decent revenue where waste reduction covers the fee. **4. TouchBistro** - worth a look if your cafe behaves like a full-service restaurant: table service, reservations, a real food menu, servers running checks. It's iPad-based and the floor-plan/table-management side is stronger than Square's. **5. Loyverse** - the honest answer if you're pre-revenue or running a tiny single-register operation. Free, includes basic inventory and a loyalty program, and you bring your own payment processor. It won't scale, but it beats paying for software you don't need yet. **SpotOn** and **Clover** come up often too. SpotOn is decent on labor/team management and tends to be more flexible on processing rates than Toast. I'd be cautious with Clover - the hardware is nice but the experience varies a lot depending on which bank or ISO resells it to you, and some resellers lock you into bad terms. Practical advice: the software differences matter less than the payment processing terms. Get the effective rate in writing, confirm whether you're locked to their processor, and check the contract length before you sign anything. That's where cafes actually lose money. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
