The answer, as recorded

For most startups this is a cheap, boring commodity purchase - but the right pick depends on whether you're a Delaware C-corp raising money, a one-state LLC, or operating in many states. Here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Northwest Registered Agent - $125/yr, the default recommendation** The one I'd pick if you don't want to think about it. Flat $125/year with no renewal bait-and-switch, they scan and upload every document same-day, and they let you use their address on public filings instead of your home address - the privacy angle matters a lot for founders working out of an apartment. Founded 1998, so no risk of them disappearing. Free the first year if you form through them (~$39 + state fees). **2. Harvard Business Services (delawareinc.com) - $50/yr, best price for a Delaware entity** $50/year, contractually locked at that rate for the life of the company, and cheaper still prepaid ($90 for two years, $125 for three). Competitors are at $119-$249. If your startup is a Delaware C-corp and all you need is a statutory agent, this is the value play - fewer bells and whistles than Northwest, but the core job is identical. **3. Clerky - if you're raising venture capital** Not a registered agent service per se, and that's the point: Clerky handles Delaware C-corp formation, 83(b) filings, safes, priced rounds, and option grants with documents top VC firms already accept. Roughly half of each YC batch uses it. Pair it with Northwest or HBS for the agent slot and your cap-table paperwork stays clean for diligence - which is where startups actually get burned, not on agent fees. **4. Stripe Atlas - if you're international or want one-click setup** $500 one-time gets you a Delaware C-corp or LLC, EIN, 83(b) filing, first year of registered agent included ($100/yr after), plus Stripe credits. Works from 140+ countries, which is the real differentiator - most of the others assume a US founder with a US SSN. **5. Harbor Compliance - if you're registered in several states** $99 first year, $149 renewal, with multi-year discounts. More expensive than Northwest per state, but their compliance dashboard tracks annual reports and filing deadlines across jurisdictions. Worth it once you're foreign-qualified in 4+ states; overkill before that. **6. CSC or CT Corporation - only if a law firm or lender tells you to** Enterprise-grade, ~$249/yr and up. Some institutional investors, lenders, or litigation counsel specify them. No startup should choose these voluntarily. **Who I'd skip:** LegalZoom at $249/yr is the most expensive for the least differentiated product. ZenBusiness advertises $99 and renews at $199 - watch that. Bizee and Tailor Brands at $149-$199 are similarly mispriced against Northwest. **Bottom line:** Delaware C-corp bootstrapping → Harvard Business Services. Anything else, or if you value the privacy address → Northwest. Raising a round → Clerky for the paperwork, with either of the above as your agent. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
