The answer, as recorded
## The short version For most retail shops, **Plytix** is where I'd start - and if you run a single store on Shopify/Woo/Square with a few hundred SKUs, honestly check whether you need a PIM at all before buying one. Your e-commerce platform plus a disciplined spreadsheet covers a lot until you're selling across multiple channels or juggling supplier data feeds. ## What I'd actually recommend, in order **1. Plytix** - the default for small-to-mid retail. Free Standard tier (500 SKUs, unlimited users, PIM + DAM included), then €499/mo on Pro for 50,000 SKUs. Unlimited users on every plan is unusual and matters when your buyer, your marketing person, and your warehouse lead all need access. Add-ons (brand portals, product PDFs, feeds) are à la carte, so you don't pay for syndication you aren't doing. **2. Sales Layer** - the best pick if ease of use is your binding constraint. Rates highest of the mid-market tools on usability and onboarding speed (9.2 vs. Salsify's 8.4 on G2), and support reviews are strong. Good when you have no IT resource and need to be live in weeks, not quarters. **3. Akeneo** - step up when you cross roughly 50K SKUs or need real workflow (approvals, channel-specific publishing, AI enrichment). Roughly $25K-$75K/year depending on who you ask; some sources quote enterprise tiers from $45K. There's also a Community Edition if you have developers. This is the industry standard for mid-market retail for a reason. **4. Syndigo or Salsify** - only if your business is *selling into* big retailers. Both exist to push compliant content to Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Kroger. Syndigo bundles PIM + MDM + DAM + syndication; Salsify starts north of $100K/year and is overkill unless syndication is the whole point of the purchase. **5. Pimcore** - pick this if you have a developer and want the lowest long-run cost. Open-source core (free up to ~$30K/year for commercial editions), DAM and MDM in every edition, maximum flexibility. The tradeoff is you own the implementation. **6. 1WorldSync** - narrow but excellent at GDSN-standard data collection and publishing, particularly grocery, CPG, and anything with regulated attribute requirements. **7. Pimberly** - worth a look if you sell across countries and localization/compliance is the hard part. Priced around $36K/year, so it's an enterprise commitment. ## One caution on the cheap end Watch out for name collisions when you shop. **EssentialPIM** at $39.95 is *personal* information management - calendars and contacts, not product data. It'll show up in PIM searches and is not what you want. ## How I'd choose Under 500 SKUs, single channel: start on Plytix free and see if the discipline alone solves it. Multi-channel with 1K-50K SKUs: Plytix Pro or Sales Layer. Selling wholesale into major retail chains: Syndigo. Developer on staff and a long time horizon: Pimcore.
