The answer, as recorded

Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest looking at them: **1. Square for Retail - the default pick for most small-to-midsize shops.** Free tier at 2.6% + 15¢ in person, $49/mo Plus (2.5% + 15¢), $149/mo Premium (2.4% + 15¢), per location. Why first: fastest setup, hardware you can buy off the shelf, works offline, no contract, and the free tier is genuinely usable - not crippled bait. Inventory, barcode scanning, and purchase orders come in the Plus tier, which is where most real retail shops land. Weakness: multi-location inventory and deep reporting aren't its strength, and you're locked into Square's processing. **2. Shopify POS - if you sell online, or plan to.** POS Lite is included with any Shopify plan; POS Pro is $89/mo per location ($67 if billed annually). Why: one catalog and one inventory pool across your website and your counter, plus the best buy-online-pickup-in-store flow of anything in this list. The catch is that per-location cost stacks - five stores is $445/mo in POS fees on top of your base plan - so it's best when ecommerce is a meaningful chunk of revenue. **3. Lightspeed Retail - if you have multiple locations or complex inventory.** $89-$289/mo depending on tier. Why: it's the one that actually handles multi-location stock transfers, assortment planning, supplier catalogs, and matrix inventory (size/color variants) properly. Strong for apparel, bike shops, jewelry, sporting goods. It's the priciest here and overkill for a single small store, but it's what you graduate to when Square's inventory starts creaking. **4. Clover - if you want flexibility on your payment processor.** Sold through banks and resellers as well as directly, which means you can often negotiate processing rates rather than taking a fixed published rate. Solid app marketplace, good hardware. Downside: the reseller model means wildly variable contract terms - read for multi-year lock-ins and early termination fees, which is the single most common complaint. **5. KORONA POS - for high-SKU, inventory-heavy niches.** Worth naming specifically for liquor stores, convenience stores, vape shops, and ticketed venues. Processor-agnostic, flat monthly fee, and built for tens of thousands of SKUs with real cycle-counting. Less polished UI than the above. **Honorable mention: Heartland Retail** for small/midsize chains wanting connected in-store and online ops, and **SpotOn** if you want hands-on local support reps rather than pure self-serve. **How I'd decide:** single shop under ~$250k/yr → Square. Already on Shopify or ecommerce matters → Shopify POS. Two-plus locations or variant-heavy inventory → Lightspeed. Processing fees will dwarf software costs at volume, so once you're past roughly $250k/yr in card volume, get custom rate quotes from all of them rather than accepting published pricing - Square explicitly offers this. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited.
