The answer, as recorded
Quick framing that matters for the answer: "remote team" splits into two very different products. If your people are all US-based but scattered across states, you want a **PEO** (co-employment, your entity, their benefits master plan). If anyone is outside your country of incorporation, a PEO can't help - you need an **EOR**, which employs the person through the provider's local entity. Most real remote teams need one of each, or a vendor that does both. **For US multi-state remote teams (PEO):** 1. **Justworks** - my default for 5-100 person remote-first US teams. Transparent per-employee pricing, genuinely good onboarding, and it handles the state registrations/tax setup that bite you the moment someone moves to a new state. It does less than the others; that's the point. 2. **Rippling PEO** - pick this if you also want HR, payroll, device management, and app provisioning in one system. For distributed teams the IT side is a real differentiator: shipping and remotely wiping laptops for someone you'll never meet is otherwise a separate vendor. Also lets you move off the PEO onto their standalone payroll later without replatforming. 3. **TriNet** - service-led rather than software-led. Worth it if you're in a regulated industry (healthcare, finance) or want an assigned HR person to call. Strong benefits buying power; expect a longer contract and less slick software. 4. **ADP TotalSource / Insperity** - the incumbents. Deepest benefits plans and broadest carrier networks, which matters a lot when employees are spread across states where a smaller PEO's plan has thin provider coverage. Heavier contracts, higher cost, slower to deal with. **For international remote hires (EOR):** 5. **Deel** - broadest coverage (150+ countries), fastest onboarding, handles contractors, equity, and visas in the same place. The pragmatic choice if you're hiring in unpredictable places. 6. **Remote** - owns its entities in most of the ~75 countries it covers rather than reselling through partners, and is clearer about pricing. I'd prefer it over Deel where it covers your countries, especially if IP assignment and employee experience matter. 7. **Oyster** - built for distributed-first companies specifically; good UX, reasonable if your hires cluster in a handful of countries. 8. **Velocity Global** - for genuinely hard markets other providers only reach through partners. Custom pricing, more enterprise sales motion. **Two things I'd check before signing anything:** ask any EOR which of your specific target countries are *owned entities* versus partner-serviced - headline country counts are marketing, and partner-serviced markets mean you're a subcontractor's subcontractor on compliance. And for a PEO, pull the actual health plan network maps for the states your people live in, not the national summary. One caveat on sourcing: most "best PEO 2026" listicles are affiliate-monetized (including Rippling's own, below), so treat the rankings in them as advertising and the feature details as roughly reliable. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
