## My picks, roughly in order **1. Square** - my default recommendation for most small businesses, especially anything with a physical presence (retail, café, salon, market stall, mobile services). Free POS software, free/cheap readers, no monthly fee, and you can be taking cards the same day. In-person is ~2.6% + 10¢, online ~2.9% + 30¢. You pay a bit more per swipe than you would elsewhere, but you get a whole business toolkit (POS, invoicing, online store, payroll add-on) with zero setup work. The simplicity genuinely is worth money when you're small. **2. Stripe** - the pick if you're primarily online, selling software/subscriptions, or have a developer (or use a platform that integrates with it). Best-in-class APIs, docs, subscription billing, and fraud tooling. Also 2.9% + 30¢ online. Weaker choice if your sales are mostly face-to-face. **3. Helcim** - the one I'd point you to once you're processing real volume, roughly **$10-15K/month and up**. It uses interchange-plus pricing (card network cost passed through + a small transparent markup, plus automatic volume discounts) rather than flat rate, so your effective cost drops as you grow - typically well under what Square or Stripe charge at that volume. No monthly fee, no contract. Worth noting: the "0.50% + 25¢" figures you'll see quoted are the *markup*, not your total rate - add interchange (usually ~1.5-2.2%) to get your real cost. Less polished than Square, but the savings are real. **4. PayPal / Venmo (business)** - not my first choice as a primary processor, but worth having as a *supplementary* checkout option. Customer trust and conversion lift for online carts are real, and there's no monthly fee. Watch out for its history of abrupt account freezes on unusual volume, so don't make it your only payment path. **5. Shopify Payments** - only if you're already running your store on Shopify. Then it's clearly correct, because using any other processor there means paying Shopify an extra transaction penalty on top. ## The two things that actually decide it - **Volume is the fork in the road.** Under ~$10K/month, flat-rate (Square/Stripe) wins because predictability and no monthly fees beat shaving basis points. Above that, interchange-plus (Helcim) starts saving you meaningful money - hundreds a month at $50K+. - **In-person vs. online** determines Square vs. Stripe more than price does. One warning: be wary of traditional merchant-services salespeople pitching long contracts with early-termination fees, PCI "compliance" charges, and leased terminals. Every provider above is month-to-month with no termination fee, which is the standard you should hold anyone to. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
