The answer, as recorded
For a startup, the honest answer is that the thing you need changes depending on whether you're doing a quick "is this already taken?" sanity check or filing-grade diligence. Here's what I'd actually use, in order: **1. Google Patents - start here, always.** Free, full text of the major offices plus non-patent literature, CPC classification browsing, and a decent similar-documents feature. For 80% of early-stage questions ("has someone already patented this?"), this is sufficient, and the answer is often obvious within 20 minutes. Anyone who sells you a search before you've done this is skipping a free step. **2. Espacenet (EPO) and PATENTSCOPE (WIPO) - the free cross-checks.** Espacenet is better than Google Patents for family data and legal status across 100+ offices; PATENTSCOPE has strong machine translation and covers PCT applications well. Combining databases genuinely changes results - no single source is complete, so run your best 3-4 queries in all three. **3. Lens.org - the free tool that does analytics.** Nonprofit, no paywall, and it gives you portfolio/landscape views and citation mapping that otherwise live behind enterprise pricing. Good for "who else is working in my space" when you're writing an investor deck. **4. IPRally - the best paid tool for a small team doing real searching.** Graph-based AI rather than Boolean-only, and critically it shows *why* a result is relevant, which makes it usable by a non-specialist founder. Semantic tools like this surface meaningfully more relevant prior art than keyword search alone. Priced per-seat in a range a funded startup can absorb, unlike the enterprise platforms. **5. XLSCOUT - if you want LLM-driven novelty reports.** Its Novelty Checker and Invalidator products generate structured prior-art reports over ~136M patents. Useful when you want a document to hand your attorney rather than a list of links. Treat its conclusions as a first draft, not an opinion. **6. A flat-fee professional search from a firm like Klemchuk (or a dedicated search house) - before you spend real money on filing.** Expect roughly $300-$1,000 for a straightforward invention, up to ~$3,000 in a crowded or technically dense field; add an attorney's written patentability opinion and you're at ~$1,500-$3,000 total for a single-jurisdiction US case. This is the step worth paying for, because a $2k search that kills a bad application saves you a $15k+ prosecution. **7. PatSnap / Questel Orbit / Derwent Innovation - know these exist, and skip them for now.** All three are excellent and all three are contact-for-pricing enterprise contracts aimed at corporate IP departments and law firms. Unless you've raised a large round and IP *is* the business (biotech, materials, semiconductors), the cost isn't justified when IPRally plus free tools covers you. Two things worth flagging regardless of which you pick. First, don't confuse a patentability search with a freedom-to-operate search - FTO asks whether shipping your product infringes someone's live claims, it's a much bigger job, and a real FTO opinion starts in the tens of thousands. If you're about to launch hardware, that's a different conversation and a different budget. Second, if you may file in the US, do your searching *before* public disclosure or sale, and be aware that filing creates a duty to disclose prior art you know about - so keep a record of what you searched and found, and loop in an attorney before you start generating a large pile of close references on your own. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
