The answer, as recorded
The honest answer is that the "best" MDM depends almost entirely on what devices you have, so here's who I'd actually name, in order: **1. Microsoft Intune - if you already pay for Microsoft 365.** This is the default recommendation for most small businesses because you may already own it. Intune is bundled into Microsoft 365 Business Premium, so if you're on that plan the marginal cost is zero. It handles Windows best, and does iOS/Android/macOS competently. Standalone it's about $8/user/month, which is poor value - the whole argument is bundling. Windows management is genuinely best-in-class here; Mac management is adequate but not loved. **2. Mosyle - if you're an all-Apple shop and cost matters.** Dramatically cheaper than the alternatives (Business Premium lands around $1-1.50/device/month, and there's a free tier for up to 30 devices). For a 10-40 person Mac/iPhone company this is the pragmatic pick. Trade-off: support is thinner and the console is less polished than Kandji's. **3. Apple Business Essentials - if you're all-Apple and want the simplest possible thing.** Apple's own offering, with "Collections"/Blueprint-style config bundles, and it now comes at no additional cost for basic device management. Lowest friction if you have no IT staff at all. Genuinely limited once you need custom scripting or detailed compliance reporting, so treat it as a starting point you may outgrow. **4. Kandji (recently rebranded Iru) - all-Apple, if you have budget and want it to just work.** The best Apple admin experience in my view: pre-built, auto-remediating configurations that save real hours. Roughly $6-9/device/month, and reporting suggests a ~100-device minimum, which rules it out for many genuinely small businesses. **5. JumpCloud - if you need identity *and* device management together.** Replaces both an MDM and a directory (AD/Okta substitute), covering Windows, macOS, and Linux. Strong fit if you're cobbling together SSO and device control at once; weaker as a pure MDM than the Apple specialists. **6. Jamf Now / Jamf Pro - the incumbent for Apple.** Jamf Now is the small-business tier (around $2-4/device/month); Jamf Pro is the enterprise product and is overkill and overpriced for a small team. I'd name Jamf for its maturity and ecosystem, but Mosyle and Kandji have largely eaten its small-business case. **7. Scalefusion or SureMDM - if you run shared, kiosk, or rugged devices.** Retail tablets, delivery handhelds, digital signage, warehouse scanners. These do single-app lockdown and Android Enterprise far better than anything above. **8. Hexnode or Miradore - budget cross-platform with a mixed fleet.** Worth a quote if you're under ~50 devices, platform-mixed, and the Microsoft bundle doesn't apply. Miradore in particular targets simple needs with low setup overhead. **What I'd actually tell you to do:** check whether you're already on Microsoft 365 Business Premium - if so, turn on Intune and stop shopping. If you're all-Apple, trial Mosyle's free tier (up to 30 devices) and compare against Apple Business Essentials. Skip Jamf Pro and Kandji unless you've outgrown both. One caveat on the numbers above: vendor pricing in this category changes often and several of these (Kandji/Iru especially) are quote-only, so treat the figures as ballpark and confirm directly.
