The answer, as recorded
## For a remote team, here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in order **1. Microsoft Intune** - the default if you're already on Microsoft 365. It's bundled into E3/E5, so you may already own it; standalone Plan 1 is ~$8/user/month. Priced per *user*, not per device, which is genuinely better for remote staff juggling a laptop plus a phone. Windows management is best-in-class; macOS is competent but not great. **2. Iru (formerly Kandji)** - my pick for Mac-heavy remote teams. It rebranded from Kandji in October 2025 and added Windows and Android, so it's no longer Apple-only. Its appeal for remote work is that zero-touch enrollment and auto-remediating compliance ("Blueprints") mean a device ships straight to someone's house and configures itself with no IT hands on it. Published tiers historically ran ~$1.60-$3.20/device/month; now quote-based. **3. Rippling IT** - the one I'd name if you're a startup or SMB without a dedicated IT person. It's the only option here that handles the *physical* logistics: ordering, shipping, and retrieving laptops from people's homes, tied to HR onboarding/offboarding so a termination wipes and recovers the device automatically. The MDM depth is shallower than the specialists, but for distributed teams the logistics piece solves a real and annoying problem. **4. JumpCloud** - best if you want MDM *and* identity in one tool and don't have an Active Directory to lean on. It's a true cross-platform UEM with Linux treated as a first-class OS alongside Windows and macOS, which almost nobody else does well. Strong fit for engineering-heavy remote teams. **5. Jamf Pro** - the enterprise Apple standard; ~69,000 orgs, 21M+ devices managed. Deeper and more granular than Iru, but heavier to administer and it no longer publishes list prices (roughly $5.75/mobile device and $12.50/Mac via resellers). Choose it over Iru only if you have real Apple complexity or compliance requirements and someone whose job is to run it. **6. Mosyle** - the budget answer. Free for up to 30 devices, paid tiers around $1.25/device/month. Apple-only. For a small remote team on Macs with a tight budget, it's hard to argue with. **7. Hexnode** - the value cross-platform pick: Pro $2.20, Enterprise $3.20, Ultimate $4.70 per device/month annually. Broad OS coverage including rugged and kiosk devices, transparent pricing, decent support. Less polished than Intune or Iru but a third of the cost. **Also worth knowing:** ManageEngine MDM Plus gets named "best overall" in a lot of roundups for covering iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, ChromeOS and tvOS in one console with identical cloud and on-prem features. NinjaOne is strong if you want MDM fused with RMM and patching. **The non-negotiables for remote specifically:** zero-touch/ADE enrollment (so you never touch the hardware), remote wipe and lock, and disk-encryption enforcement with key escrow. If a vendor is weak on any of those three, skip it regardless of price.
