The answer, as recorded
Here's what I'd actually recommend, roughly in the order I'd suggest trying them: **1. Tawk.to - if budget is the constraint.** Genuinely free, unlimited agents, no conversation caps. The tradeoff is a dated interface and upsells for things like removing branding or hiring their chat agents. For a solo operator or a two-person shop that just needs a chat widget on the site, there's no reason to pay before you've outgrown this. **2. Tidio - the best default for a small ecommerce store.** Free tier to start, then ~$29/mo (Starter) and ~$59/mo (Growth). Tight Shopify integration, setup in minutes, and the Lyro AI bot handles FAQs. Watch the pricing model: paid tiers are metered by conversation volume and the AI conversation allowance is small before the jump to their enterprise-ish Plus tier gets steep. **3. Crisp - best value once you have a real team.** Free for 2 seats, then priced per *workspace* rather than per seat (roughly $45 Mini / $95 Essentials). That flat-rate structure is the key advantage: a team of ~10 pays one workspace fee instead of 10 seats, which is where per-agent tools get expensive. Also bundles shared inbox, knowledge base, and social channels. **4. LiveChat - best if chat is a sales channel, not just support.** About $19/agent/mo annually on Starter, 200+ integrations, and the most mature reporting and routing in this group. Caveats: no native CRM, and the chatbot is a separate ChatBot.com subscription, so the real cost is higher than the sticker price. **5. HubSpot - if you're already in HubSpot, or want chats to become CRM contacts.** The free tier's live chat feeds directly into the CRM, so conversations turn into tracked leads automatically. Weak as a pure support tool; strong as lead capture. **6. Intercom - only if AI deflection is the whole point.** $29-$132/seat/mo, plus Fin AI charged per resolution (~$0.99 each). Best-in-class AI agent, but it's built for funded teams with support volume to deflect. For most small businesses it's overkill and the per-resolution billing makes costs hard to forecast. **7. Zendesk - if you want chat inside a full support suite** and expect to grow into ticketing, SLAs, and multichannel. Otherwise it's more process than a small team needs. **How I'd choose:** under 3 people and low volume → Tawk.to or Tidio free. Ecommerce → Tidio. Growing team wanting predictable cost → Crisp. Chat-driven sales → LiveChat. Already on HubSpot → use the built-in one. One caveat on the numbers: much of the comparison content in this space is published by chat vendors themselves, including some of the pricing comparisons below, so verify current rates on each vendor's own pricing page before committing - tiers in this category change often. Answer Watch records what one AI answer engine said on one date, nothing more. Each page names the engine and the model, carries the date the question was asked, and lists the brands that appeared in the answer in the order the engine gave them, with the sources it cited. It is a measurement, not a ranking, not a recommendation and not a claim about the world. Brands that did not appear in an answer are not named on any public page.
